Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have waited with baited breath since May to see what season five of the hit medical drama had in store for them. On Sunday, August 31st, ABC finally released their first Grey’s Anatomy promotional ad containing scenes from season five, premiering Thursday, September 25th at 9 pm ET.

Back in May, series creator and writer Shonda Rhimes promised fans via podcast the show would not rely on old soap opera standards to break up Meredith and Derek this season. But ABC’s first spoilerish season five promo would contradict her promise. In the promo, interloper nurse Rose proclaims to Derek (Patrick Dempsey) she is carrying his child. It doesn’t get more soapy than that.Once that promo hit the airwaves, and the YouTube channels, it set off droves of MerDer fans, who had been predicting the couple’s next snafu since their seemingly happy ending last spring.

Was head honcho Shonda Rhimes going back on her word? Was the promo misleading? We’re going with the latter. After fan outcry, Rhimes immediately issued an exclusive statement to EW.com’s Michael Ausiello saying she would "not deceive our fans, especially those loyal enough to listen to our podcast."

So what’s the final verdict, soap fans? Is Rose pulling a Maxie Jones? Or is she pulling a Chloe Mitchell ? Tune in this fall to find out!
