Summer Movie Preview 2010

Memorial Day is just around the corner and while it usually means a time for BBQ’s and family vacations, it’s also the beginning of the summer movie season.

The summer season is fully stocked with big Hollywood blockbusters, sequels, prequels, and remakes. Are the remakes necessary? No, but it’s becoming a staple in Hollywood these days.  The summer season has already started off with a bang, with “Iron Man 2,” which has made a total of $251 million at the box office, since it opened May 7th.  The weekend kicks off with the release of “Sex and The City 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to 2008’s big screen version. The top ten most anticipated films of the summer are as followed:

 

“The Twilight Sega: Eclipse”- June 30th  As a string of mysterious killings grips Seattle, Bella, whose high school graduation is fast approaching, is forced to choose between her love for vampire Edward and her friendship with werewolf Jacob.

“Jonah Hex” (Josh Brolin, Megan Fox)- June 18th In the Wild West, a scarred bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on liberating the South by raising an army of the undead.

‘Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time” (Jake Gyllenhall)- May 28th.   An adventurous prince teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.

“The Expendables”- (Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts )August 22nd  A team of six mercenaries heads to South America on a covert, CIA-funded assignment to overthrow a dictator — fully unaware they’re on a suicide mission that might redeem their souls, or destroy their brotherhood.

“Inception”- (Leonardo DiCaprio)July 16th- A sci-fi/thriller set within the “architecture of the mind,” and centered on a group of business people who can construct a dream world for an individual and then infiltrate that world to steal their subconscious.

“Salt”- (Angelina Jolie) July 23rd As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy.

“Knight and Day” (Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz) June 25th  A lonely woman (Diaz) crosses paths with a super-spy (Cruise) and finds herself whisked away on a globe-spanning adventure where, amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, nothing and no one are what they seem.

“Robin Hood” (Russell Crowe)- May 14th .  The story of an archer in the army of Richard Coeur de Lion who fights against the Norman invaders and becomes the legendary hero known as Robin Hood.

Sequels, Prequels, and Remakes: Oh My!
It wouldn’t be summer without sequels, prequels and sadly, remakes.  Following “S&TC2,” we will be treated with: “Shrek Forever After” (5/21), “Step Up 3D (8/6) (no that’s not a typo); Toy Story 3(6/18); “The Karate Kid”(6/11); “Piranha 3D (8/27) and Predators (7/9).

For romantic comedies, there’s the Queen Latifah flick, “Just Wright” opening May 14th.  The story of a physical therapist (Latifah) who falls for the basketball player (Common) she is helping recover from a career-threatening injury

Amanda Seyfred’s “Letters To Juliet” (5/14)- An American girl on vacation in Italy finds an unanswered “letter to Juliet” — one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover’s Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by a the “secretaries of Juliet” — and she goes on a quest to find the lovers referenced in the letter.

Ashton Kutcher and Gray’s Anatomy star, Katherine Heigl star in “Killers” (6/04)- A vacationing woman meets her ideal man, leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple.

Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell team up in the cop buddy comedy, “The Other Guys” (8/6)-Two mismatched New York City detectives seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops whom they idolize — only things don’t quite go as planned. Also starring Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton.

SNL’s Will Forte brings “MacGruber” to the big screen, which also stars, Ryan Phillipe,  and Val Kilmer.  Ex-special operative MacGruber is called back into action to take down his archenemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who’s in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C.  (5/21)

Julia Roberts returns to the big screen, starring in “Eat, Pray and Love”.  Directed by “Glee”/”Nip/Tuck” creator, Ryan Murphy.  While trying to get pregnant, a happily married woman realizes her life needs to go in a different direction, and after a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey.(8/13)
