The Box Office Report — August 27 – August 29, 2010

This week sees two films in a virtual tie for the top two spots.  Lionsgate’s The Last Exorcism starring Patrick Fabian and newcomer Ashley Bell and Sony Pictures’ Takers starring Paul Walker, Zoe Saldana, Matt Dillon and Hayden Christensen took the top spots with $21.3 million and $21 million respectfully.

The Last Exorcism is reminiscent in style to the Blair Witch Project in that it was filmed in hand held cameras giving off a shaky illusion that you were actually there.  A young girl (Bell) is possessed by demons and a pastor comes forth to exorcise the demons.  Takers is an action adventure film about a group of bank robbers and the cops who are assigned to catch them.

In third place is Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables starring Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jason Stratam and many more action adventure heroes. The action flick, currently in its fourth week of release brought in $9.5 million dollars.

Coming in fourth place is Julia Roberts’ romantic comedy Eat, Pray, Love, bringing in a respectable $7 million in its third week.

Mark Wahlberg’s The Other Guys, brought in $6.6 million.  Rounding out the top ten: Vampires Suck with $5.3 million, Inception with a little over $5.1 million, Nanny McPhee Returns with $4.74 Million, The Switch with $4.65 million and with $4.3 million is Piranha 3D.
