Day of Days 2011: An Interview With Freddie Smith & Casey Deidrick

0

Freddie Smith (Sonny) and Casey Deidrick (Chad) speak with Soap Opera Source at Days of our Lives’ fourth annual Day of Days fan event.

The on-screen friendship of Chad DiMera and Sonny Kirakis mirrors that of the friendship between their portrayers, Casey Deidrick and Freddie Smith. In watching their interaction, to simply say those two are amusing would be an understatement. Casey says he’s grateful that Days of our Lives allows them add their own spin to the Sonny and Chad friendship.

The relationship between Sonny and Chad is a unique one, especially for daytime television. Rarely does TV showcase the kind of open, best friend relationships between gay guys and straight guys the way DAYS is with Sonny and Chad. “Chad doesn’t care [that Sonny is gay],” says Deidrick, explaining that for Chad it’s more about who Sonny is as a friend.

On the show, Chad and Sonny have started an internet site along with their other friend, Will Horton (Chandler Massey). It is not all fun for the boys though, as Smith explains “There is illegal gambling on our website and we need to put a stop to that before we get blamed for it. ‘There will be blood’ is our kind of catchphrase for the day. I keep saying it, because there will be blood.” When asked whose blood it may be at the end of this, neither star would spill.

Chad is also busy in his personal life, as he recently was caught in a lip lock with his girlfriend Abigail’s best friend. “It was an accident,” states the actor about a kiss with Melanie, who was wearing the same Halloween costume as Abby. It’s obvious the two have chemistry, but is there something there? He explains, “Melanie makes Chad feel good, kind of like a kid,” going on to say with her it would be kind of light and fun, where with Abby things are a bit more serious due to her family issues.

While Chad has his hands full with two ladies, Sonny seems to be all alone. Smith assures us it won’t be for long though. “Sonny starts dating. He is playing the field. He is there for Will too, during his coming out.” With Will coming out, we asked how long it would be before Will and Sonny became an item, but Smith says it’s more of a continuing friendship for now. “[Will] kind of looks up to [Sonny] because he has already come out. So, of course Sonny will be there and be his friend and help him out.”
