In honor of Valentine’s Day, TVSource Magazine staff compiled a list of our 14 favorite couples and pairings from our favorite primetime shows!
We all have our favorite couples – the ones that keep us coming back week in and week out, hoping for the faintest glimpse of a shared scene. We root for them to say how much they love each other, wishing they would reunite, wishing they would own up to their true feelings. Whether it’s the way they he looks at her, or the way she smiles when he’s around, these couples feed our inner “shipper” each week.
Now, for those who don’t know (ie live under a rock), a “shipper” is one who supports a fictional romantic relationship – be it for those who are together or those who could potentially be together. You’ll see that term used sporadically throughout this piece.
Though it was difficult to only select 14, so don’t be surprised if we follow up with an even bigger list soon! It should be noted that these are listed in no particular order.
The Salvatore Brothers & Elena – The Vampire Diaries (The CW)
Vampire Diaries shippers usually fall to one side: Team Stefan or Team Damon. We’re planting ourselves firmly in the middle. Damon is the uncontrollable, react without thinking, and gives a damn about no one kind of guy – except for Elena. Stefan is hardened on the outside, but vulnerable beneath the surface. His newfound bad guy attitude has fallen short on Elena this season because she knows him well enough to know he cares. Each is an anti-hero in his own way and we can’t help but root for both to get the girl.
See, the truth is we don’t care who Elena ends up with when it comes to Damon and Stefan. Each guy brings out a different side of Elena. With Damon supporting her this season, Elena has become more independent, less afraid, and more of aware of the severity of her doppelganger situation. Holding on to her love for Stefan gives her strength and it’s that love that forces her to still believe in the good that exists in him and the world around her.
It’s a triangle done well. We can’t wait to sit back and see how it unfolds, excited when she steals a moment with Damon and feeling our heartbreak when she confronts Stefan. Whose team are you on? Or are you stuck in the middle too?
Adam and Kristina Braverman – Parenthood (NBC)
This is a couple that has stood the test of time. They are a long-married couple, with two teenagers (one with Asperger’s Syndrome) and a newborn. On top of that, Adam has lost his job and is embarking on a new and risky career in the music business. If that weren’t enough, a young intern is making the moves on Adam in the recording studio. Yet with all these challenges and pressure, Adam and Kristina survive. More, they are still rock-solid and devoted to each other and their children. They are my absolute favorite primetime couple and if the show runners break them up, I may have a nervous breakdown.
Spencer Hastings and Toby Cavanaugh – Pretty Little Liars (ABC Family)
These two truly bonded for the first time after each of them had been accused of murder; not exactly the foundation on which most high school romances are made of. Spencer and Toby believed in each other’s innocence and as they worked together to clear their names, they started to see just how special the other person was. Their relationship has been filled with roadblocks from the start; neither of their families approved and the secrets Spencer harbors continue to come between them. Even with the odds against them, they couldn’t help but fall in love.
Mary Margaret Blanchard/Snow White and David Nolan/Prince “James” Charming – Once Upon a Time (ABC)
It’s a FAIRYTALE romance that transcends time and space. What more needs to be said? They are perfect together, and even more perfect when kept apart, as only a true “shipper” can truly understand. Prince Charming is handsome, gallant and noble. Snow is brave, true and feisty. They are simple lovely and have quickly become Once Upon a Time’s number one super couple.
In Storybrook, Mary Margaret and David continued to be kept apart thanks to the machinations of Mayor Regina Mills/The Evil Queen, but the pair are now embarking on a forbidden affair that can only create trouble once its exposed.
Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf – Gossip Girl (The CW)
From the very first episode, the chemistry between these two has been off the charts. She’s the Queen Bee – pretty, popular and smart; He’s the misunderstood bad boy – selfish, arrogant and prone to making bad choices. But when it boils down to it, Chuck and Blair have an undeniable connection. They’re both a little lost and completely determined to be the best. They’ve hurt each other countless times but their love has only gotten stronger, even when they’re apart. They’ve each proven time and time again that nothing and no one is more important than the love they feel for each other.
Richard Castle and Kate Beckett – Castle (ABC)
This is a classic case of true love, unspoken. With each passing season, Beckett and Castle have grown closer and closer, until Beckett was shot at the end of last season. As she lay near death, Castle told Kate he loved her. Unbeknownst to him, she actually heard those words and now keeps them to herself, her lovely little secret. Fear and uncertainty keeps them both from taking the final steps to a real relationship, but also keeps fans and viewers tuning in to find out if THIS is the episode they admit their true feelings. Plus, it’s a very cute little whodunit murder mystery and Nathan Fillion is funny as all get-out.
Zoe Hart and Wade Kinsella – Hart of Dixie (The CW)
Relationships that walk the thin line between love and hate are always a pleasure to watch unfold. Wade and Zoe have been bickering since the pilot, but that hasn’t stopped them from making out a few times. Their chemistry sparkles whether they’re trading insults over breakfast or exchanging longing looks in the middle of a heat wave. Neither of them is quite willing to admit that there’s something between them but that doesn’t stop jealousy from rearing its ugly head whenever they see the other person with someone else. There are clearly going to be a lot more bumps in their road to coupledom, but seeing them finally give in will be worth the wait.
Robin Scherbatsky and Barney Stinson – How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
Even though they aren’t together right now, Barney once said it best, “We’re both afraid of commitment, but we also can’t live without each other.” When the series began Barney was a womanizer with severe commitment phobia, but has grown into a man accepting of his feelings and willing to lay everything on the line for the woman he loves. Robin is terrified of getting back together with Barney because she’ll either A) get everything she ever wanted with him or B) get her heart broken again.
Barney and Robin get one another – from cigar smoking to picking up men and women to the lies they force themselves to live. Despite the fact that they’re grappling with severe cases of commitment phobia, they’re so dependent on one another that they couldn’t survive without each other. She calls him out on his sleazy, womanizing ways and he sees through the hardened exterior that hides her vulnerable side. They recognize one another’s issues and help carry each other’s baggage all around New York City. It may sound cliché but they accept one another for who they are and make each other better people.
This exchange sums up their beautiful train wreck of a relationship perfectly:
Robin: I’m such a mess. Why do you even like me?
Barney: I guess, because you’re as messed up as I am.
We’ve RSVP’d for their wedding and it doesn’t even have a date yet.
Emily Thorne & Daniel Grayson – Revenge (ABC)
Emily’s relationship with Daniel started out as a plot for revenge, but over time it became increasingly obvious there is more going on. Nolan, Jack, her Japanese trainer friend – they’ve all realized the depth of the feelings she’s trying to hide. Daniel is more than a spoiled, drunk rich boy. He’s changed his life for the better and is just wound up in a life of lies and secrets like Emily is. They’re suffering for the sins of their parents, the sins of their fathers, and daddy issues are a great foundation for a soapy relationship. If Daniel knew the truth behind what really happened with David Clarke, we have a feeling he’d wind up on Team Emily.
Also, Daniel has brought stability, comfort, and companionship to her life and she does the same for him. And judging from last week’s flashback where Emily once told Daniel he was better than his family, we’ve got a feeling she truly believes that and would never do anything to purposely hurt him. Daniel just may be the thorn in her side that throws her entire plan off kilter.
Nathan and Haley Scott – One Tree Hill (The CW)
Nathan Scott and Haley James Scott have survived everything. “Naley” as they’re affectingly referred to by their fans, have overcame Nathan’s hatred of his half-brother Lucas (and vice versa), bad high school wardrobes, teen marriage, school shootings, teen pregnancy, Chris Keller, a baby boy, music career, car accidents, life-threatening injuries, Dan Scott, Nanny freaking Carrie, the loss, gain and loss again of a professional sports career, Lucas and Peyton’s relationship, kidnappings, death, weddings, jumping off bridges, sports betting, alcoholism, another pregnancy – it never ends. And it’s still going on since Nathan is missing. They’ve loved each through many trials and tribulations without getting divorced or turning their backs on one another. They define what a tested super couple is all about. Their love helps them conquer adversity. Need we say more? This couple is one for the books.
Alicia Florrick and Will Gardner – The Good Wife (CBS)
Why should you love Alicia Florrick and Will Gardner? Better question? Why not? Julianna Margulies and Josh Charles are simply dynamic together! They deliver the sweet moments and manage to leave us swooning with a sweet tooth aching for more. They give us the kind of funny one liners that we find ourselves repeating constantly. They define sexy with scenes that leave us hot and bothered, wanting more. Then there’s the angst. Oh, the angst! They rip our hearts out and tear them to teeny tiny pieces and still, we love and adore them. We continue to root for them in spite of the decisions they have made. The best part of their relationship lies in what led up to their romance. Before the start of their hot love affair, they were friends for years – a fact that makes everything between then beautifully genuine.
Will Schuester & Emma Pillsbury – Glee (FOX)
Will and Emma are the not-so-classic, classic root for couple of Glee. We have rooted for them through his failed marriage and hers, his cheating and her OCD. Through it all they have proved that when love is true it can make it through anything. Plus who isn’t going to root for a couple when their proposal involves top hats, song, and synchronized swimming. That is why our pick for Glee is the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Schuester!
Jack Porter and Emily Thorne – Revenge (ABC)
Two words describe these two – Soul mates. Emily (really Amanda who, for the sake of this feature, we’ll refer to as “Emanda”) is one badass chick seeking revenge on people who did her father wrong. Jack stayed in the Hamptons where they grew up to take over his father’s bar. These two were kids together, playing in the sand, sharing ice cream, and sharing secrets. Fast forward and now “Emanda” is hiding her true identity from everyone including Jack.
Here’s the thing though, when the real Emily pretended to be Amanda, Jack remembered everything about his girl from when they were kid and “Emanda” noticed it. We’ll ignore the fact that Jack doesn’t recognize her, because no one else in town does either…
Even when he’s alone with “Emanda”, there’s an undeniable current underneath the surface that connects them. So while she puts her revenge plan into motion which includes attaching herself to Daniel Grayson, deep down she knows it’s never over with Jack. He knows the real Amanda.
Temperance “Bones” Brennan and Seeley Booth – Bones (FOX)
These two circled each other for what felt like an eternity. Bones and Booth are the yin to each other’s yang. One relies on science, facts, and black and white; the other, heart, intuition, and the gray areas of life. Separate they’re ok but together they’re extraordinary.
Booth humanizes Bones, making her more understanding, whereas Bones loosens up Booth, reminding him to have fun in life. It doesn’t hurt that Booth is easy on the eithers either. Like most destined couples, everyone around them saw what lied between the two of them before they acknowledged it. When Bones revealed she was pregnant with Booth’s baby, his sweet, small smile said more than any words could. As they prepare to have their child, these two continue to work on navigating work and home roles on an endearing roller coaster ride.
