Contract Renewal for 'General Hospital' Star Rebecca Herbst

Fan favorite Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) has signed a new contract with ABC’s General Hospital reports Soaps In Depth.

“I’m looking forward to what they have in store for Elizabeth,” said the actress to SID.

What a difference a year makes! In a span of 14 months, GH vet Rebecca Herbst has been fired, re-hired and now given a contract extension! It was a little over a year ago when ABC announced Herbst would be departing in the spring, ending her 13 year run on the soap.  “Storyline dictates the exit of Elizabeth Webber this spring,” said an ABC rep to Soaps In Depth at the time. “The next few months promise to be ‘not-to-miss’ story for the character. We at ABC and GH wish Rebecca Herbst nothing but the best in her future endeavors.”

Thankfully that exit never saw the light of day. Fan outcry and backlash prompted the network to reverse its decision, saying, “Rebecca Herbst will continue on General Hospital as Elizabeth Webber. The show is thrilled she will remain on the canvas to portray the beloved character in many more poignant and emotional stories. Fans will be pleased to see Rebecca continue the role she created.”

After a change in head writers last May, Herbst’s alter ego found herself with a lot to do, coming to grips with the end of her on-again, off-again relationship with ex-Lucky, rekindling an old rivalry with Maxie and catching the eye of doctors Ewen and Matt.

It’s important to note that there’s no correlation between the actress’ contract extension and the future of the soap, as ABC isn’t expected to announce a decision for another couple of weeks. In the fall of 2010, former One Life to Live execs (now General Hospital execs) Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini, signed new two and three year contracts with ABC, only for the network to cancel the soap seven months later.

Congratulations to Herbst on her extension! Hopefully we have a lot more GH AND Elizabeth in our future.

  3. Congrats to RH. Now it is time for GH to let Liason have the romance that they were meant to have , years ago. Former HW/Guza never like this pairing therefore he did everything that he could to not make it happen, even killing off their child that they never had a chance to grieve for together. Liz had to loose her child just so the whiny, clingy Sam can have a child which I hope turns out to be Franco’s after all since it seems that Jason and Franco are related (brothers, twins).
