The CW has released a new clip from the premiere in which Elena discovers she’s dead. Check out the clip to see how Stefan and Damon break the unsettling news.   

 In the preview, Elena awakens from a slumber that was filled with sounds of sirens and water, her face heavy with panic. Stefan is waiting at her bedside and tells her she’s been in and out of consciousness for hours. Elena’s first concern is Matt, which causes Damon to chime in from the other side of her bedroom. It’s clear he’s not forgiven his brother or Matt for Elena’s newfound predicament. It’s going to be a while before Damon considers Stefan a hero – if ever. These brothers are definitely going to be at odds for a while during season four. 

When Stefan slowly explains what has happened, from Jeremy taking her to the hospital to the car accident and what Dr. Fell did, Elena doesn’t quite put the pieces together. It isn’t until Damon bluntly breaks it to her that vampire blood was in her system when the car went off the bed that everything clicks. Tears in her eyes, Elena has the reaction we’ve all been waiting for and asks, “Am I dead?”
