Note: All columns analyzing the television products put on by WWE and TNA are done from an entertainment standpoint. While “insider” terms such as “face” and “heel” may be used, commentary stated is focused on the storytelling and characters – just like any other TV show we’d critique.

John Cena / Dolph Ziggler

During a surprise appearance by the Chairman of the Board, Vince McMahon, he called out RAW Managing Supervisor Vickie Guerrero to the ring to discuss the TLC PPV.  Vince states that John Cena and Dolph Ziggler should face each other at the PPV and reminds her that the Pay-Per-View is called Tables, Ladders and Chair and that the match should reflect one of those. During their conversation, Mr. McMahon whispers into Vickie’s ear that it should be a ladder match, causing Vickie to scream out and stammer that there needs to be something hanging above the ring in order to have a ladder match and that neither man is a Champion, to which Mr. McMahon states that possibly there should be a briefcase hanging above the ring. This makes Vickie stammer out that the stipulation for their match at the TLC PPV will be a Money  in the Bank Ladder Match.

Mr. McMahon and Vickie also discuss that there is a lie detector test later on in the evening for CM Punk to try to clear his name in any involvement with Brad Maddox or The Shield. Mr. McMahon keeps goading Vickie until she states that if CM Punk is found to be lying that there should be a punishment for the person that is behind the entire thing.  Vickie stammers out yet another stipulation, that if CM Punk is found to be lying that Paul Heyman shall have to face Ryback next week on RAW.  Mr. McMahon seems really happy with Vickie’s decision and his music begins to play as he gives her kudos.

CM Punk / Ryback

Earlier in the night, Miz and CM Punk had a war of words in which Cm Punk adamantly denied any involvement with Brad Maddox’s shenanigans at Hell In A Cell or The Shield’s interfering at Survivor Series.  Miz says that he wants to invite Cm Punk onto the MizTV Talk Show and have a lie detector administered by someone from the local police department.  Cm Punk finally agrees after Miz states that unless he does it, his 370+ day reign as WWE Champion will have an asterisk beside of it in the record book.

During MizTV, CM Punk finally gets hooked up to the lie detector test and Miz states that he has to ask a few baseline questions some that the man administering it can see how he reacts to true statements.  Miz uses this time to anger CM Punk by bringing up embarrassing times of the past like Rey Mysterio shaving his head after a match.  Finally, Miz gets to the real questions and asks if CM Punk thinks that he can defeat Ryback on his own.  CM Punk answers that of course he can, to which the lie detector spikes and shows him to be lying.  CM Punk gets angry again and says that he can’t be lying if it is an opinion question.  Miz then begins screaming at Punk and asks if he had involvement with Brad Maddox or The Shield.  Just as it seems that CM Punk is about to give the answer everyone has been waiting for, The Shield hits the ring and begins to attack Miz.

Just as the numbers are totally against the Miz, Team Hell No hits the ring to try to even things up but are quickly taken down by Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns.  Ryback finally hits the ring and evens the numbers back up again and begins to take out The Shield.  Ryback fights to the back with The Shield as CM Punk stands tall in the ring and gloats as he places his foot on Miz’s chest.  What CM Punk doesn’t see is that Ryback is right behind him as he gets nailed with the Shell Shock. Ryback looks like he has new life in him as he searches around the ring and collects all of the necessary items for a TLC match.  He attacks Punk’s back with a chair, then nails him with a ladder to the midsection.  Finally, to end the show, Ryback picks Punk up and smashes him through a table set up in the ring.

Final Thoughts

With the PPV just less than two weeks away, I believe that they did an awesome job of driving home the importance and the emotion of the two main events for the event.  The internet erupted when it came to the Dolph/Cena setup, but in my honest opinion, I believe that this is all in order to have Cena help elevate Ziggler as he has with other talents in the company.  Ziggler can defeat Cena in a ladder match by not pinning him and it also leaves Cena unscathed.  I also feel that by the end of the night, Ziggler will not only be holding the MITB briefcase, but will also cash in to become the next World Heavyweight Champion.

It was just announced via WWE.com that CM Punk injured his knee during the RAW broadcast and will now be out of the Main Event at TLC.  The replacement match was announced during the Smackdown tapings to be Ryback & Team Hell No going against The Shield in a three on three tag team match. We here at TV Source will keep you updated to any more developments and how Punk does after his surgery is completed.
