‘The Originals’ Season 1 Wish List: What We Want for Rebekah

1

Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) has been one of our favorite characters on The Vampire Diaries since the first time she appeared onscreen early in season three. Now that the character is moving over to the spinoff series The Originals, we’re excited to see what’s next for the Original sister.

Sadly, we know things rarely go Rebekah’s way, despite the fact that she’s been alive for nearly 1,000 years. We’ve watched her fall in love hard and fast, only to be left broken and alone, both in the present and in flashbacks. We’ve seen her spoiled side and her vulnerable side and we’ve watched her help the people who have hurt her as well as go out of her way to make them suffer.

Rebekah finally got to win one when Matt (Zach Roerig) agreed to spend the summer with her in Europe. But we know ultimately Rebekah is going to choose her family and join brothers Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) in New Orleans. We’ve read a few spoilers, but we have our own thoughts on what we’d like to see during Rebekah’s season one journey.

Family Business

the-originals-01Despite rejecting Elijah’s initial over to move to the French Quarter, Rebekah changes her mind and leaves Mystic Falls behind. Her relationship with her brothers is complicated. She loves Elijah and respects him, but the two don’t always see eye to eye. But that’s nothing compared to her fractured relationship with Klaus, which has been a series of betrayals over the years.

Can the two find their way back to each other? We hope so, but we want to see Klaus work for it first. He’s hurt Rebekah too much to just give her a half-hearted apology and then go back to doing whatever he pleases. We wouldn’t blame Rebekah if she’s only onboard with the plan because she doesn’t want to leave Elijah.

One thing we definitely want to see is what fractured the siblings back in the day. We’ve seen their ‘always and forever’ promise to stay together, but when the characters were introduced, Elijah had been separated from Klaus for hundreds of years and as far as he knew, Rebekah was gone for good. What made Rebekah choose to run with Klaus in the first place when the siblings separated? For that matter, what made Klaus and Elijah go their separate ways? We need answers.

What’s her history with Marcel?

In a recent interview, Holt hinted at an ‘explosive’ history with Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). It sounds to us like things were hot and heavy back in the day between Rebekah and Marcel and the relationship didn’t end well. We’re going to need those flashbacks immediately for so many reasons. Let’s start with the completely shallow and just look at how gorgeous these two people look next to each other:

But we also want to see what’s going on, or not going on, between the two in the present. Do they hate each other or love to hate each other? Is there a genuine connection between the two or is it purely physical? We’re guessing Klaus probably didn’t approve back in the day and he certainly won’t approve now when his goal is to take back everything Marcel has and we doubt he’ll want Rebekah in the middle.

That being said, it wouldn’t surprise us if Rebekah purposely plants herself at the center of the war to get back at Klaus or maybe to get back at Marcel if she has residual anger that she’s been hanging on to. Rebekah usually has her own agenda and we wouldn’t mind seeing her stir up trouble. And if there is real love between Rebekah and Marcel, we can’t wait to find out whose side she’ll truly be on when all is said and done.

The Queen of the Quarter

the-originals-rebekah-tarot-cardKlaus and Marcel will probably continue to battle as the show goes on, but we’d like to see Rebekah remind everyone how strong she is and that she can basically do whatever she wants because she’s an Original and the only female one at that. We love her sassy side and it’s fun to watch Rebekah trample over the people she deems unworthy of her time. But we don’t need her to be all mean girl all the time (just most of it). We’re curious to see how she will get along with the witches and whether or not she’ll have any interaction with Cami (Leah Pipes).

We do know that Rebekah will be protective of Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and the baby that she’s carrying. Rebekah’s always wanted to be a mother and she knows better than anyone what it’s like to be ordered around by the Mikaelson brothers. It’ll be interesting to watch that story unfold because as we said in our Hayley wish list, both women need a friend, but it’s not exactly an ideal situation. We’re curious whether their bond will prove to be real or whether it’s just a circumstantial friendship that will fall apart quickly.

The Originals premieres Thursday, Oct. 3 at 9/8c before moving to its regular night and time Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8/7c on The CW.
