‘Suits’ Summer Finale Review: Ask Me to ‘Stay’

Suits aired its midseason/summer finale Tuesday night and it might finally be safe to say that we’ve seen the last of Ava Hessington (take a shot). But the official end of the case was one of the least important moments of the hour.

Overall, “Stay” didn’t feel like a finale, even though there was a cliffhanger at the end (we’ll get to that). At the same time, it seems fitting that it wasn’t the norm because this season as a whole has been different from past seasons due to the Ava Hessington (take a shot) case being front and center.

So let’s talk about how it got wrapped up (we hope). Ava hired Tanner to be her lawyer. Harvey assumed Tanner had sought her out so he could stick it to him, but Tanner insisted Ava came to him. It turned out that Tanner was right about that: Ava was really mad about the way things went down and she wanted to see everyone pay. Tanner was his usual terrible self and this time he attempted to use Scottie to get to Harvey.

Sadly, Harvey didn’t punch him again, but we did get some great scenes. Jessica warning Scottie that she would be the target was awesome because it’s so nice to have her and Harvey on the same side again. But the best part (and the best scene of the episode) was Donna and Mike teaming up to go to bat for Harvey.

They went to visit Stephen Huntley in jail, claiming to be his lawyers so he would agree to see them. When the two of them together couldn’t get him to admit that he was lying about Scottie knowing about the murder plot, Mike stepped out and Donna played her ‘you promised to be honest’ card. Stephen admitted that he was still a lying liar who lies and that was when Mike returned and Donna told him she’d gotten everything they need. Stephen looked confused, but Mike and Donna pointed out that all conversations were taped and since they weren’t his lawyers, the tape was fair game.

But that wasn’t enough to stop Tanner so Harvey and Jessica started pointing out all the dirt they had on Ava Hessington (take a shot) during a deposition and how easily they could turn the case around and make everything her fault. Harvey made her see reason, she agreed to drop the lawsuit and Tanner lost again (suck it, loser).

Mike and Rachel continued to have issues over her law school choices. At first I thought Mike was just being selfish and I was really annoyed with him, but I can see that he’s honestly afraid of losing her and what they have and the poor guy never really gets to win when it comes to his personal life (partially because he picks the worst people and I don’t mean Rachel).

He tried to give Rachel the space she asked for to make her pro/con list decisions, but he still kept finding ways to try and see where her head was at. After realizing that he doesn’t want to end up like Harvey (how sad was that Mike/Harvey scene where Harvey pointed out that he was not the person to come to when it came to love advice?), Mike told Rachel that if she does go to Stamford, they’ll make it work.

Unfortunately, Jessica learned of their relationship and realized that Rachel had to know the truth about Mike’s non-lawyer status. She wanted Rachel to sign an affidavit or she was going to fire Mike. Rachel had a counter solution: she would sign the affidavit if Jessica agreed to waive her ‘Harvard only’ rule so that she could work there when she finished law school. It was kind of a BAMF move and I was more than a little impressed. Jessica was too and she agreed. Of course Rachel decided on Columbia because she wants to be with Mike (no surprise there).

In other relationship news, Harvey offered Scottie a job at the firm now that Darby is gone and it’s just Pearson Specter. Scottie wasn’t really interested in a job and was disappointed that was the reason Harvey invited her over and cooked dinner. But after only a tiny bit of hesitation, Harvey admitted that he wanted her in his life and it looks like they’re going to attempt to make a go of it.

Honestly, I would have loved this development if it wasn’t for the flashback episode. I will never recover from the Harvey/Donna emotional can of worms it opened. Before, I was perfectly fine assuming they would get together in the finale episode of the series and ride off into the sunset together. But now that Donna has broken her ‘no dating coworkers’ rule and Harvey is about to embark on a relationship with one of his, I don’t understand why Harvey and Donna don’t just openly love each other like I want them to.

The third big relationship drama of the episode was Louis and Girl Louis. They did their usual banter and weird sex that we’re not going to talk or think too much about right now (or ever). But it turns out that Scottie was not the only woman looking for a commitment. Shelia made it clear that their occasional whatever was not enough for her and Louis asked her to be exclusive. Now here’s where this storyline gets interesting.

Shelia left Louis alone in a room with Harvard law graduates’ files. She warned him not to touch anything and he promised he wouldn’t, but then he couldn’t help himself. First he looked at Harvey’s and mocked his picture and next he went to check Mike’s…and it wasn’t there because Mike never went to Harvard. Now Louis hasn’t officially jumped to this conclusion yet, but it’s a safe bet that he’s headed there.

The previews for the winter premiere showed Louis doing more investigating and even speculating that maybe Mike didn’t go to Harvard, but will it actually turn into anything? Does it matter? Harvey and Jessica will protect Mike and themselves. Donna and Rachel both know the truth. If anything, this could cement Louis’ place as part of the team. I have a hard time believing that he will be Mike’s downfall.

Did you guys enjoy the finale? What was your favorite part? Do you think any of the couples are meant to last or do you think the second half of the season will be filled with breakups? Hit the comments and I’ll be back next week with my midseason review.
