After months of searching, The Young and the Restless has found their new Adam Newman! Passions and Revenge alum Justin Hartley will return to daytime television this fall when he takes over the role of Victor Newman’s devious youngest son.

TV Guide (who broke the news) reports the actor will report to set in late September and will first air during November sweeps. Hartley will succeed Michael Muhney, who was let go from from the series last December.

“I’m so pumped about joining Y&R — I watch it all the time and can’t wait to get in there and get my hands dirty!” said Hartley to TV Guide.

The actor’s new role on The Young and the Restless marks a return to the genre he called home from 2002-2006. Justin Hartley originated the role of hunky heir Fox Crane on NBC’s Passions in 2002. After departing the show in 2006, he focused his attention on making his mark in primetime, landing series regular roles on Smallville, Emily Owens, M.D. (Ed. note: I’m still not over this cancellation), Revenge and most recently a season-long arc on Mistresses. Even with his post-Passions success, Hartley doesn’t consider a return to soaps as a step-back.

In his interview with TV Guide, the actor expressed a “great respect” for the daytime genre, declaring his love for the style. “It’s all about story and character with me and I don’t care if the job is on daytime or primetime or the web. Hey, give me a good character and someone to listen and I’ll do my acting on a street corner.”

My Take: Excellent casting! It’s no secret that this casting process has taken forever, but I really believe CBS made the right choice. Justin Hartley is a fantastic actor with great screen presence. He’s played characters with an internal darkness on Smallville and Revenge, injecting vulnerability underneath the tough facade projected to those around them. Most importantly, he’s a team player and consummate professional. This is a great hire for The Young and the Restless and I can’t wait for him to make his debut! Is it November already?
