Why General Hospital’s Sonny Needs to Face Retribution

7

Sonny needs to pay for what he did to AJ and Michael. There have been plenty of times in the past that Sonny should have paid for his immoral lifestyle but never did. If he goes unpunished again, it will be one tease too many for the audience.

General Hospital needs to get over it’s obsession with pretending that Sonny Corinthos is a good person. He’s not. There was a time where there was some hope for the vile godfather but that doesn’t exist anymore. Sonny needs to face retribution now in order to make him a good character again. As is, the character is no longer viable as a romantic lead. With the classic romance between Sonny and Brenda, the audience was given the fantasy of a man who might just love someone enough to one day change and become a better person. He can’t give us that anymore.

I’ll give General Hospital’s current creative team some credit for trying to make him still fit into the canvas of the show. They created story line for the pairing of Sonny and Connie (Kelly Sullivan) that was romantic and unselfish on Sonny’s part. When Connie left they attempted pairings with one of his baby mamas Olivia (Lisa LoCicerogh), then fellow mobster Ava (Maura West), and now ex-wife Carly. Problem is all these relationships were based on sex rather than love. Just because a couple has been a couple before doesn’t mean that the audience doesn’t need to see them fall back in love. We never saw Sonny earn any of these leading ladies and the result is that these women look like fools now.

The many, many loves in Sonny’s life have become his caregivers rather than subjects of any deep love. Olivia took care of him by making sure he took his medicine and cutting the crust off his toast; Ava took care of him sexually by giving him time in a crypt when he was feeling low; Carly is taking care of his ego by proving to him he can have her whenever he wants. The big issue with this of course is that he doesn’t take care of any of these women back. It’s all one sided and to his benefit.

So what should be done with Sonny? Should he exit stage left? Well that is definitely one option that makes sense and perhaps the most simplest one too. It’s not the only solution though.

General Hospital needs to do something very drastic with the character. Sonny needs to be knocked down several pegs and humbled. Hit the self-destruct button and see if the pieces can be put back together into something better.

Franco (Roger Howarth) and Carly’s Hallowedding set into motion what could be the start of Sonny’s long overdue comeuppance. Franco’s recording not only provided his DA daddy with enough evidence to hopefully send Sonny to Pentonville but it yanked the rose colored glasses off of Michael, threw them on the floor and stomped on them. Sonny now faces the possibility of losing his freedom and Michael and I am here for it!

Sitting up on that pedestal has exhausted this character and he needs a rest. Have him actually pay for this crime and do some time. Take away his most prized possession, Michael. It’s not enough for Michael to just be mad at Sonny for a little while. Michael needs to turn his back on Sonny and never look back.

While it may be tempting to see how much fun they can have writing Sonny out of this mess, I hope the writers don’t do it. Saving Sonny, giving him freedom and love when he hasn’t done anything to deserve it, would be the wrong move. Don’t give him any more women or children to destroy! Tear him down. Let him fully realize the weight of his actions and then have him grow as a character. Then maybe …just maybe, I may actually like him again.

  1. You’re welcome and I greatly did. It was a topic that on the show that I was hoping you all discussed. It’s been greatly annoying how ‘in the right’ Sonny has been portrayed for years when he’s not. He’s just as bad as the bad guys he hates; maybe even worst than them.

  2. Great article. I agree wholeheartedly. I hope there’s some retribution from Sonny, and that Michael goes back to the Q’s, complete with a name change.

  3. I love this article too.

  4. PERFECT!! I love I was always one of those fans who thought AJ was screwed and as much as I like Carly & even Sonny for a while, that was one thing I couldn’t let go of. I love Maurice Benard but if the price for Sonny finally paying for his crimes means that he has to go then so be it…and if the final nail is his coffin, so to speak, is AJ’s murder even better.

  5. Thank you for reading! I’m glad you enjoy my article.

  6. You hit the nail on the head. No further commentary needed.

  7. This article was 100% spot on as to why I can’t find myself rooting for Sonny or any of his actions currently. Thanks for writing and sharing with us!
