Two elephants in the room

Does that refer to the two elephant statues in play? Or the two proverbial elephants in the room that this storyline is both boring and confusing. It seems like every week we see Serena Mason desperately try to snatch up some African home knick-knacks, her commitment to the job begins to wane. Or maybe it’s the fear that’s setting in. Unlike the prissy, entitled woman who blew into town to sweep up Eric Brady, Serena’s been on edge as of late as a mysterious woman named Navidad came to Salem to press her for more results. Apparently they’re both working under some big boss that they’ve only been mentioning with the use of masculine pronouns. Just who is this mystery man?

I must say that I have been enjoying watching Serena squirm this week, especially after how she’s treated Nicole Walker since first coming to town. Even when Nicole bumps into her outside Sonny’s club, her sass levels turned down to minimum as she tries to be civil, Serena can’t help but to be poisonous. The two loves of Eric Brady verbally squabble just a little bit until Nicole reminds Serena that she saw her with two elephant statues, finding the whole situation to be fishy. Serena talks her way out of it before she slips away to meet Eric at Victor Kiriakis’ club. It’s there that he introduces her to his new acquaintance, Navidad whom she already knows very well.

Though the storyline has felt like torture to watch unfold, the addition of this sultry new character almost has me interested. As long as the wardrobe department can keep her dressed in onepieces with hoods a la Kylie Minogue ten years ago, then Navidad is fine by me! Serena had to pretend not to know her higher up (in whatever organization they both belong) until Navidad skittered away only for a shaken Serena to come up with a work excuse to ditch Eric too. Later that night, after receiving more pressure from Navidad, Serena shows up to Daniel Jonas’ place to see his daughter under the guise of a redhead girls’ night in but she’s really in it for… the statue, of course! Maggie Horton shows up, completing the ginger trio and when the other two are off distracted, Serena uses this time to open up the statue to retrieve what seems to be a bag full of diamonds. Finally! Finally we know why this statue was of such value to her but even with the jewels now in hand, only more questions arise.

Theories have been all across the board as to who is running this diamond smuggling ring – if that’s what it truly is. There of course have been the safe bets like Stefano Dimera, the usual international crime kingpin, or Chad Dimera who has been eager to prove himself as of late and has yet to share scenes with Serena. But there are also others wondering if this might be connected to the Blake siblings what with Kristen’s return coming in just a few weeks and the latest mentions of Peter popping up in the first time in a long time. Could Peter Blake be the one pulling Serena’s strings just in time for him to roll into Salem with his sister? What are your thoughts?

She knew he was trouble

Yet Theresa Donovan can’t keep her hands off of mysterious drifter, Clint! Everyone in Salem has felt the permeable creep vibe that he exudes but whether Theresa truly feels it too and is just choosing to ignore it has yet to be seen. For the time he’s been out of town, Theresa’s been preaching about happy she’s been since Clint left her, even slowly falling back into Brady Black’s orbit. This week, Clint reappeared on her doorstep all lean, mean and full of excuses that an initially angry Theresa eventually buys into.

Jen LilleyThough it is frustrating to see a character get in their own way all of the time, Theresa’s easy acceptance of shifty Clint back into her bed goes right along with who the character is and has always been. Kudos to the writers on keeping her character so consistent – even frustratingly so. Theresa is desperate for her own slices of love and happiness, so when she can’t have them then she resorts to destructive behaviors like unknowingly dating the enforcer of the man who stole her unborn child to compensate or to brag. After getting close to Brady again then pushed away, an obviously still wounded Theresa thought it’d be better to have someone rather than no one to spend time with. Later, the two of them must disperse to their respective jobs; Theresa makes way to the hospital while an armed Clint tails Brady in the park. Once the billionaire’s jog is over, he heads home to the Kiriakis mansion only to get a dart in the neck much like the one his step-brother took two years ago at the hands of Kristen Dimera. Only this time, Brady wasn’t injected with a powerful lust inducing drug but some kind of sedative that has him out cold in seconds.

Clint slips his way into the home, removes the poison dart, cash from Brady’s wallet and then a vial of blood directly from Brady’s veins. Melanie and her father Daniel Jonas stumble upon Brady’s prone body sometime after Clint leaves to go hook up with Theresa again. He’s brought into the hospital while his friends and family pray he isn’t using again, however Melanie has other ideas. For some reason Melanie thinks Theresa was the one who attacked and maybe drugged Brady, so like the walking mouth piece she is, she storms over to Theresa’s place so that she can accuse her. Ironically enough, Melanie’s groundless accusation of Theresa ultimately saves her as even in the middle of a little afternoon delight, Clint had been poised to give Theresa another kind of needle.

Even if Theresa knew that Melanie was her savior from her criminal lover, I doubt she’d express her gratitude – at least not without an underhanded compliment thrown into the mix. Clint’s return for blood has taken this already twist filled storyline in a new direction, one that I didn’t expect. Just what could Clint, Mandrake and probably Kristen need Brady and Theresa’s blood for? Is it possible that something might be wrong with the stolen baby that a blood test or transfusion is needed? It would have been hilarious if only Brady’s blood had been needed, signifying the lack of confidence in Theresa and her paternity claims. But both parents’ samples are needed! What are your theories?

Once again, these recaps are not blow for blow recaps and contain a lot of my own feelings toward the storylines this week. Use my points to kick off a conversation. Comment here or tweet me if you agree or disagree with me, I want to know what the readers have to say. Your input is what makes this all the most fun. See you next week!
