Gays of our Lives: Kiss Me, You Fool

Welcome to an all new edition of Gays of Our Lives. This week, Magnus and Alec kiss for the first time on Shadowhunters. Is that why it’s the best episode of the year? Plus, Ben and Paul kiss in a time of grief on EastEnders. Could this perhaps be the rekindling of their relationship? And on People of the Valley, Iolo pulls out all the stops to get Tyler’s attention. But will he get a kiss or the kiss off? All this — and more!

PICKS AND PANS

Shadowhunters (U.S.)

I’m glad that Magnus and Alec finally got it together and are now looking to see where things go between them. I like that this is not all about them ‘being in love’ and some such other nonsense given they barely know each other, but Alec accepting who he is and living his life. And I’m looking forward to seeing the next phase in Alec and Magnus’ relationship. I’m sure there will be lots of starts and stops and hopefully other guys thrown in as roadblocks and I want to see that.

However, I’m puzzled as to exactly why Alec’s parents are against Alec and Magnus. Is it because they are both men? That Magnus is a warlock? What? The show is being vague about that, at least to me.

I’m glad that Lydia wasn’t some woman fooling herself into thinking Alec loved her. I did notice a little something between she and Jace in that scene. I wouldn’t mind her sticking around because I liked her, but I wouldn’t want to see her become roadkill in Jace and Clary’s boring ass relationship.

So Clary is supposed to be pure of heart and whatever else let her be able to walk through the green fire? Odd since she is by far the most selfish and self absorbed person on the show.

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 11.42.51 PMI really like Simon’s new look and I’m glad they haven’t changed his personality much, yet.  I wouldn’t want him to lose his adorableness just because he’s a vampire. I’m guessing by that scene with Isabella (and that they were paired in the alternative universe episode) that she is going to be Simon’s main love interest?

Seeing that the death of his friend meant so much to Magnus, it would have been nice if we had of seen this bond and this character before instead of a quick intro moments before he dies. It would have made the whole plot point much more meaningful.

Even though I think the show has done a lousy job with the depiction of Jace and Alec’s bond, I did like them making up and the talk they had about relationships.

When Clary said they gave the cup to Lydia I assumed it had been transferred off site for safe keeping. But Lydia just had it locked up in a closet in her room. Why wasn’t it just kept where Clary and Jace had it before? Seemed to me it was much safer there.

I watch a lot of television, probably too much. But can you really watch too much TV? I've yet to find out. Anyway, I especially love TV when they give us positive portrayals of gays, something that has gotten better but we're still fighting for. I've written about gays in television for many years first at the much missed After Elton, then New Now Next and now at TV Source. It's kind of a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with you.

  1. I liked Lydia’s reaction, too. She knew exactly what she was getting into and didn’t begrudge Alec’s decision to pursue something happier.

Aaron wasn’t nasty to Robert for suggesting Liv was up to something. He was nasty to Robert because Liv could only find something out that was dangerous because Robert bribed a kid to make a false allegation. Robert created this mess in his attempt to meddle with Aaron’s life without his consent, and Aaron isn’t going to waste time giving him sympathy when there isn’t much that they could do.

Didn’t Lawrence give Bernice a pass to pursue other men? She declined, but based on what he said about his late wife, he seemed like he would be fine with it if she discretely met her needs elsewhere.

Phil’s doing too many horrible things in a row for people to forgive him. They should at least create some event or action that gives his family a reason to reconsider.

I hope the fake baby drama doesn’t last too much longer. I also wonder whether Paul/Lee/Whitney will notice they’ve picked up Ben and Abi’s infection.

I’m looking forward to Johnny being back. There’s only so much gay guys and their girlfriends that I can take.
