Gays of our Lives – Raging About the ‘Hospital’

Emmerdale (U.K.)

vlcsnap-2016-05-02-15h00m24s647I love Finn, I really do. He’s always been one of my favorites. Who doesn’t appreciate a cute geek? And the actor, Joe Gill, can do the comedic stuff as well as the serious storylines, like when Finn was kidnapped and feared he might have been raped. Finn hasn’t had a boyfriend since that dumb storyline where he dated Darren. His being continually on the back burner on this show makes little sense and is a waste of talent.

I know the show has Robert and Aaron hogging up all the gay airtime, but they should be able to find some time, some story and an ongoing love interest for Finn. All the other UK soaps have multiple gay characters who have their own storylines and lives. This show should be able to do it too. I hope the new writers and producers get on that.

As far as this week, it was an interesting one. It’s long past time for Finn to do something with his life. He’s been in limbo for a long time.

And it makes perfect sense that with Val gone, his hating his job and the money he came into for him to make some changes.

I did like Finn blackmailing Charity and Ross into giving him all that money or he’d turn them in. It’s the best thing Finn has done in like, ever. They deserve it. I hope the cab business does come off and it actually brings story for Finn and not just Ross and Pete.

General Hospital (U.S.)

Screen Shot 2016-05-01 at 10.04.57 AMEvery time I watch Brad and Lucas together on GH, I get angry. Don’t get me wrong. I love them as individual characters and a couple. My problem is that we only get to see them once a month or so and they still don’t have a storyline. Yes, they are planning their wedding, but it’s not really a storyline. The show treats it like filler scenes between the endless mob dramas they are in love with.

It just makes no sense to me that on a show called “General Hospital”, the doctors get the least amount of story and airtime. But the powers that be at this show think that folks want more of the mob stuff even if the ratings would say otherwise. You’d think that shows about medical dramas weren’t popular on television. How long has ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” been one of the most top rated nighttime shows, BTW? This mob stuff is just played out. GH hasn’t gotten the memo that The Sopranos has been off the air for a very long time.

About this past week, the scenes of Lucas and Brad planning their wedding we’re really sweet and I loved Brad pointing out that it wasn’t that long ago that such a thing was inconceivable and they shouldn’t stress over ‘minor’ details like a venue and a date.

I do hope that we get to see more planning on-screen and that the wedding takes place on-screen as well. And please, let the wedding be about them and not everybody else’s drama. Most of all, no shooting or violence. The straight folks can have that on their wedding days.

Michael Easton is on the show again playing yet another character? Are fans really demanding this?

Holby City (U.K.)

Screen Shot 2016-05-01 at 10.07.26 AMI haven’t watched this show in a while, I don’t think Dom has had a story since Lee tried to sue him a couple of months ago. And I’m looking forward to Dom’s new storyline when his new love interest shows up in June. For now though this cancer storyline with Digby has always been interesting and I love how Dom has become so protective and loving for his friend.

Over the past couple of seasons we’ve got to watch Dom and Digby become close friends and see each other through a lot of drama when they initially didn’t even like each other. It’s been great to see. They have real chemistry.

I’m hearing rumors that the cancer storyline for Digby won’t have a happy ending and I hope that’s not true. Not only would I hate to see Digby leave the show, but watching Dom go through losing Arthur would not be pleasant to watch.

I watch a lot of television, probably too much. But can you really watch too much TV? I've yet to find out. Anyway, I especially love TV when they give us positive portrayals of gays, something that has gotten better but we're still fighting for. I've written about gays in television for many years first at the much missed After Elton, then New Now Next and now at TV Source. It's kind of a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with you.

  1. Gah Kalle has a drinking problem, each time he makes out with the guy next to him, not cool at all
I hate ste storyline, remember when he was working, has his shp with doug etc… good time, i don’t understand what the writers do with the character and god, give to JP a proper lover and a great storyline, this stuff with Scott is awful to see.

  2. Andy’s swoonworthy. I hope he’s not Ronnie’s stalker, as some have speculated. But why the hell is he homeless? He can’t crash with his pal, Linford?

  3. I’m confused by how Emmerdale is writing Jimmy right now. Having him buddy up with Jai and spend half his time wearing only an apron is weird.

  4. Not a very exciting week this time, I’m extremely disappointed in Emmerdale right now, I hate how once again Finn’s “story” is just him playing an extra for his mother’s crazy explosive bull, I mean I’m all for giving gays stories not exactly related to their sexuality but enough is enough, that bloke has been in the soap for three years and only manages to get a minor story every year? Tragic. And what kind of producer introduces a character and then basically treats as comic relief extra?

As for Robron, I’m starting to dread their scened together. They’re literally the most boring/horrible gay couple in Soapland (excluding HO), since Aaron and Jackson. I’m gonna have to blame the common element here and say that Danny Miller just isn’t capable of conveying real care or emotion, apart from crying I guess and giving witty monotone replies. They look more like mates than lovers. And Do they seriously want us to believe that Robert, a guy who has been known for his constant cheating on his hot girlfriends, would stay in a relationship with a cry-baby playing daddy to his half-sister and who sucks the fun out of every scene he’s in?

Nothing to say about Eastenders, except I didn’t pick up on anything between Ben and Johnny, although the show probably wants to go that direction, hopefully not. Oh and Paul has no self-esteem at all, he’s basically Ben’s doormat ffs.

  5. Ugh, they are playing up Patrick on River City as apparently bi or something with this really dumb mutual kiss between him and Angel last night. It’s infuriating that he was gay only long enough to facilitate in Will’s downfall and departure. But since then he has been branded a grooming paedophile while being nothing but asexual. And now he is snogging birds. Another show that is losing my interest over its whimsical treatment of homosexuality. Oh and milking Malcolm’s death for a month and the Jandhu family nonsense and Stella/Kelly-Maire/Liz/Eileen incessantly moping and everything being so dire. This show is fairly joyless now. Oh, the “new bar manager” is conveniently Gary, the gay baby-daddy to one of Whale-a-saurus’s kids. Although it seemed like he was an already highly-successful guppie with a tastefully-decorated suburban home and an ethnically-diverse partner, he is seemingly going to be slumming it in Shieldinch, slinging drinks in The Tall Ship – I guess to be closer to that one spawn. Um. ok.

OMG, OMG, OMG. Ben and Paul’s date the other night was too much. Ben showing up in a suit had me all hot and bothered. And then when he was acting all respectful and apologetic to Pam, bringing her a little curio, I about lost it. With his family watching their dinner at Beale’s, it was just too much. I was overcome. More than once.

This Iolo thing is peculiar because Masood has a dating app story line too. But they played up his robbery as funny or something weird. Only Iolo can be treated like crap by the first guy to show an interest in him, get hate-crimed and then sulk forever over it. He is on the show once – maybe twice – a week, and has a story line every ten months, usually tragic, violent or lame. Now, we get all three! It’s pretty bad when I am more interested in Sioned holding Ed maritally hostage. Although, Britt trying to get back together with Gwyneth, only for Gwyneth to jump on Sion has made for a fun double hasbian love triangle. And now that Ffion is suing her over the Chester stuff. it will only be time before Britt detonates a dirty bomb in the center of the village. But Dol would just soak up the radiation like it was booze.

And nope, still skipping right over this whole Liv/Aaron nonsense. Like he is now meant to be a mature father figure or something ridiculous? Get rid of both of them at this point. Bring Gordon back. He was not nearly as irritating. Free Gordon Livesy! Free Gordon Livesy! He’s a less lame alternative to his children!

My favorite exchange this week is from Hollyoaks. Grace and Sienna are fighting over whose wedding dress Esther will alter:
G: Hate to break it to you but you might want to go elsewhere.
S: How many alterations is she doing? I mean, I assume plunging the neckline is one of them.
G: What’s wrong with the neckline?
S: Nothing. It’s a beautiful dress. I just know how fond you are of advertising.
    G: Say that again, and it’s you that’s plunging….from a great height.
E: Technically, Sienna did asked first.
G: Well, you can’t do both so you will have to choose. And remember, we have a bond.
S: Oh, please. You were a lesbian for about a week.
G: Esther carried my child. Unlike you, who carried your brother’s!
S: Wouldn’t you be more comfortable getting married in orange? Given how much time you’ve done behind bars.
G: At least my cell wasn’t padded!
E: That’s enough. I won’t be the meat in a Bridezilla sandwich. Get out. Both of you.

Ah, Hollyoaks, You’re the trashiest trainwreck of all.

  6. Ha, yeah I remember watching those episodes when I was like eleven and I was like why does Steven fancy Christian he’s not that much of a catch, still baffled by how they make him to be this magnet for confused gay guys. Doubt he’ll be very popular, the actor has not aged well.
I hope Steven sticks around with Paul leaving we could do with another gay character, the actor is more grown up so I hope he’ll be more comfortable with playing a gay character this time around. As for Tom, I just wish they would turn him into a main or at least give him more screen-time (hopefully in a just towel like Andy yesterday)

  7. Couldn’t agree with you more about last week on EastEnders. Jay’s story is uncomfortable to watch but is realistic. The Pam thing, on the other hand, was ham-handed even though she is completely rational to regret seeing Paul get involved with Ben and the Mitchells. Pooping in a bag isn’t funny, but the scene where Denise took it into the Vic and tossed it on the table did make me chuckle.

Iolo needs a nice long hug. There was a brief scene in the school when the girls bumped into an unnamed guy and started looking for him on a social media site. Was that Tom? I don’t know the rest of the characters on this show well enough to identify all the regulars, but I got the impression he was new. And when they immediately went to the internet, it made me wonder if Tom could return in a story arc about using social sites for nefarious purposes leading to his arrest for the attack on Iolo.

  8. Just wanted to add that Tristam Summers, the actor who plays Tom Pepper on EE, tweeted from the set last week, so he’s still in the mix. How could Johnny turn down a date with Hot Pepper? Also, they’re bringing back the “Steven Beale” character who’s also gay. Aaron Sidwell is already on set and working. It’s more than likely for the Beale-centric story they’re playing later this year; but at the very least, he should have some kind of conversation with Christian, since he was part of Steven’s coming out story. In fact, Ben should have some kind of conversation with Christian as well, since he was once crushing on Christian.
