Gays of Our Lives: Not The Marrying Kind

4

EastEnders (U.K.)

I know why in terms of story they refused to call the cops, but it made no sense otherwise and just made Phil and the family not only look stupid but put Ben and Jay’s lives a risk.  The cops knew Ben was out to find those guys, no way would they shrug their shoulders at Ben being kidnapped.  Ridiculous.  The police could have tracked the killers down while the family sat around arguing and posturing.

It’s a silly plot point for a story that’s been pretty darn good. Equally as silly was Ben and Jay fleeing the scene on the pretense that their being there would ‘ruin the case’.  Umm… they were kidnapped and brought against their will.   There’s witnesses.  They broke into the Mitchell house.  Courtney and Louise can testify to that.  Fleeing and coming up with dumb cover stories is what hurts the case.  Honestly, none of this makes sense.

It’s so realistic that even in this time of tragedy, Pam’s sister couldn’t stop herself from criticizing Les, Pam’s house and Pam’s clothes.  Relatives!

But after all that buildup we don’t see the funeral? It takes place off screen?  We don’t see Ben speaking for Paul?  Not fair.  Not fair at all.  We really should have seen that.

Can Ben donate part of his liver to Phil?  He’s an openly gay man.  I don’t know the rules in the UK, but it seems like he wouldn’t be able to donate organs.  Of course, he doesn’t have to tell them he’s gay. But it seems that would be an issue.

It’s great that Phil is making a real effort to be a father to Ben.  Finally.

I hope that’s not the last of Jay. I’ve always liked him and the actor is really good.  I hope it’s just a temporary exit.

I love how UK soaps don’t even bother to hide it when actresses are pregnant.  They just pretend it’s not happening and go on with the story.

It was nice of the show to bring back it’s first gay character, but I don’t see the point.  The scenes with Dot being bigoted and Colin talking about how things have changed were so heavy handed and ham fisted.  I mean it was bit much.  Nice try though.

I’m also unclear as to why Johnny couldn’t attend the funeral.  His reasons seemed… vague.

Hit The Floor (U.S.)

Jelena sure recovered from that gunshot quickly. I mean it’s kind of unreal how she didn’t miss a beat. But I did like she stayed as mean and bitchy as ever.  But her ‘bygones’ attitude towards Sloane shooting her was a bit much.   As was Sloane basically saying ‘I had to shoot you bitch, you gave me no choice’. She wasn’t even really sorry!  LOL!   I guess the show had to wrap things up and do it fast and have a happy ending for everybody. I mean they just tore through the stories.

vlcsnap-2016-09-12-03h23m50s791I liked Jelena agreeing to take Miguel in for ‘a little while’.  You know she’ll never let him go.  That little bonding scene they had was sweet.

I like how amid all the drama, Zero went out and got an new haircut.  He really is a gay man.

I loved that scene where Jude tells Zero: “You’re the single greatest thing that ever happened to me”.  It was a beautiful, romantic moment in a love story that I’ve always enjoyed.

You just knew Jude was going to catch the bouquet.  But I’m glad the guys got their happy ending and didn’t die.  My how times have changed.

Assuming this is the last episode, I’m gonna miss it.  Hit The Floor was fun, sexy, didn’t take itself seriously and was sassy, delicious soap.  And they had two gay leading characters and the show always treated them right.  I mean they didn’t have to give them one last sex scene, but the show did.  You can’t ask for more than that.

People of the Valley (Wales)

Some of these plot turns, frankly, didn’t make a lot of sense.

Like, after everything that has happened, Iolo and Tyler postpone the wedding for… well, I’m not sure why. I mean, Iolo was all gung ho for the wedding until his father bowed out.  Iolo said what it wasn’t because of that, but that seemed to be the primary reason.  And that’s no surprise.  Iolo has always let his father control his life.  He’s still doing itsnapshot_003.

And I don’t understand the point of the Dani buying the guys a wedding. It never made sense because Dani had to know Garry would be furious, which he was.  Then the guys decide not to get married and to save face and preserve his rep as a bad ass, Garry pretends he cowered the manger into giving him his money back.  That part was funny.  The rest was a head scratcher.  What was this entire arc about?

And will the guys ever get married?  That whole thing just seemed up in the air.

I’m sorry, Iolo is taking this thing with Mel way too lightly.  This woman and her gang beat him up.  Then she started trailing him all over town and broke into his house and tried to convert him.  She sounds like a wack job and she’s going become obsessed with Iolo.  At least that’s where it seems like it’s going.  And I still don’t get why no one has mentioned her turning in her accomplices.  Iolo has never mentioned it and the police don’t seem to be pressuring her to roll over on her buddies.  So why is the show just ignoring that plot point?

I watch a lot of television, probably too much. But can you really watch too much TV? I've yet to find out. Anyway, I especially love TV when they give us positive portrayals of gays, something that has gotten better but we're still fighting for. I've written about gays in television for many years first at the much missed After Elton, then New Now Next and now at TV Source. It's kind of a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with you.

  1. Hey, Lucas was on “General Hospital” today! …oh, I’m sorry, just his picture, in recapping this asinine serial killer storyline. It’s crazy, given he’s the only living victim, that he’s not part of this story AT ALL. Ugh.

  2. It’s Iolo’s OCD that is clouding his sanity when it comes to Mel. He obsessed over the attack. He puts a suit on just to go and look at mugshots. He finds out her name. He finds out she is from good stock and artistic. He wants to know why she is a gay-hater. He stalks her like an idiot in a van with his name and contact details on it. She stalks him back. She has barged or broken into his house like multiple times already. So now he is obsessing about that. This has nothing to do with her explaining her homophobia. She is using that to play him in a ploy to taint the criminal case against her.

Since Iolo is hyper-obsessing about the attack, his father, his father’s sentence, the sun and the moon and the everything, Tyler couldn’t sit him down for two seconds. When he does, Iolo tells him to take care of the wedding plans on his own because he can’t concentrate. Tyler “hires” Dani as a wedding planner. Dani finds the discount wedding package online. She wanted the boys to buy it. Tyler says Iolo isn’t around to approve it. Dani takes Garry’s credit card and buys it so the boys don’t miss out on a deal. When Tyler offers to pay, she says think of it as a gift and less the two of them have to worry about.

The story is really not that complicated.

  3. Coronation Street is amazing right now. The romance is cute and the chemistry is off the charts. Sadly I can’t enjoy a single moment of it because I know what’s coming.

  4. On DOOL, was that supposed to be a spark between Chad & Gabi last week? That would be way out of character for Chad when you consider his history with Gabi. I hope I’m wrong.

I thought I had missed an extra EastEnders episode when they didn’t show any of Paul’s funeral. With Ben scheduled to speak and Phil agreeing to go and support him, this was a pretty big event to just happen off-screen. And I agree that Johnny would have been at the funeral. The bits with Dot & Colin seem like an attempt to give the Friday episode a message, but it ended up getting lost with so much going on. As a story arc – even a small one – it deserved to play out over a couple of days.

I don’t like this Mel story on People of the Valley but hope it will develop into something good. Why did Iolo allow her in his home in the first place? This story is getting a little sloppy. I’m glad Iolo & Tyler are postponing the wedding even though I’ve been looking forward to it. There is too much other drama in Iolo’s world right now that would take away the joy of the day. Dani got carried away with the idea of planning a wedding and spent money she shouldn’t have. If/when the wedding happens, I hope Sion makes good on his promise because I’d love for them to move into Y Felin.
