The surprises keep coming on The CW’s Riverdale – both on the show and now behind the scenes. TVLine is exclusively reporting that Ross Butler, who portrayed Archie’s longtime rival Reggie Mantle on The CW series, is departing the show ahead of season 2.

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement to the outlet though they loved Ross Butler’s work, he wants Reggie to have a major presence next season and Butler’s scheduling conflicts were to blame for his exit. “Those are big shoes to fill, but we’re confident we can find an actor who is as funny and sexy as Ross. And of course we all wish Ross the best,” said Aguirre-Sacasa.

The shocker comes after Butler’s other series — Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why — took social media by storm and skyrocketed in popularity, leaving many to believe that the show has been renewed for its own sophomore run. A search for the new Reggie Mantle is currently underway.

Riverdale airs Thursdays at 9PM on The CW.

How do you feel about Butler’s exit? Do you have suggestions for who should take over the role?
