Gays of Our Lives: A Cry For Help

1

Neighbours  (Australia)

This gay triangle is notable for one thing: two of the three are people of color.  How often does that happen.  It is a cute twist for Aaron to tell Tom he’s not interested only for Tom to turn around and start dating David, not knowing the history between Tom and Aaron and for Tom not knowing about David and Aaron.  But now that Aaron knows I wonder how long it’ll be before everybody does?  I still don’t get why Amy didn’t tell David about Tom and Aaron when Tom and David first started dating.  It makes no sense she wouldn’t.  I know she didn’t for plot reasons, but logically it’s a big story hole.

I do wish we were actually seeing more of Tom and David’s relationship.  We only saw them last a week ago for their first date and the show intimated they’ve been dating (off screen) ever since.  David’s nervousness about having sex with Tom would have been so much more meaningful if we saw the coupling build to their first time together.  I didn’t expect to see anything sexual, this is Neighbours after all, but some on screen dating would have been nice.  That said, Tom and David do have a bit of chemistry.  And I’m glad the show didn’t insist on David waiting until he got with Aaron before finally having sex.

Again, this show really knows how to dress Aaron.  He looked delicious in that blue and yellow tank top.  And Aaron’s arms are amazing.

I thought it was funny how Amy casually called Leo a slut.

Redwater (Ireland)

If things keep going like this, this show is going to win the Best Show of 2017 during my annual Best and Worst column at the end of this year.  I found the episode truly gripping. I was on the edge of my seat for most of it.

I was terrified at what Dermott might do, especially after Bernie went into labor.  I thought he was going to let her and the baby die.  But then if he hadn’t of gotten to that evidence before she had he probably would have.

I guess we’re to see that Dermott was always evil and showed traits of being a serial killer as a child given Kieran’s memories of what happened when his sister died.  But Andrew being so suspicious of Dermott makes me nervous.  With the show ending in a couple of weeks, I have no doubt Dermott will murder someone else to keep his secret.  And Andrew is a prime target.

The moments between Andrew and Kieran were so fraught with sexual tension, especially the scene in the bedroom.  The cousins clearly are in love and want each other, but are doing all they can to resist going there.   I think Kieran knows his staying in town is a bad idea and it would only be a matter of time before he and Andrew would be hooking up.  I think Andrew knows it too, but doesn’t want to let Kieran go.  He says he and Kieran can just be friends, but I don’t think either of them really believe it.

I wonder if Bernie knows or suspects Andrew is gay.  She and Dermott talked about her having the new baby only to save her marriage and they hinted that she told Dermott something about her husband in confession.  And we know that Dermott at least suspects that something is going on between Andrew and Kieran.

I did have a big quibble with this episode though.  Bernie had she and Andrew’s baby on the floor of the police station and she nearly died.  She begs Andrew to never leave her or the baby.  Andrew says he won’t, but IN THE VERY NEXT SCENE, he has left her and goes drinking with Dermott and Andrew and later pretty much professes his love for Keiran.  I mean, he couldn’t have stayed with her like he promised, even for a little while?  What a husband!

Rownd a Rownd (Wales)

David stroking Rhys’ hair was really cute.

So, the show intimates that David and Rhys are spending time together.  I think after all the drama of the past few months we need to see these quiet, couple forming moments between them.

I love that despite the fact she’s not a very nice person, we see again that Erin really loves and is protective of her brothers.

I liked that David’s sister dropped by to simply say if David needed her, she was there for him.  But I feel as if there are scenes missing.   Meical confronted Rhys about the affair, but still no scene with David and Meical?  David didn’t go to talk to his brother about hitting Rhys and the situation in general?

Why is Rhys still living at home?  He is an adult running a seemingly successful business.  I just find it strange he still lives with his dad.

I watch a lot of television, probably too much. But can you really watch too much TV? I've yet to find out. Anyway, I especially love TV when they give us positive portrayals of gays, something that has gotten better but we're still fighting for. I've written about gays in television for many years first at the much missed After Elton, then New Now Next and now at TV Source. It's kind of a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with you.

  1. I know Days of Our Lives is not your favourite soap, Anthony; but I’ve always been in complete agreement with what you’ve had to say about it. I hope you’ll give it a try when they bring Will back from the dead.
