In one of those “is this really necessary” moments, NBC has added a fall cycle of popular singing competition The Voice. The spring version of the show is set to feature new judges.

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt isn’t worried about the additional cycle burning out viewers. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the exec did acknowledge that the network is “constantly looking at the format and the way the show lays out.”

The expected changes in format include extending the audition rounds, expediting the move to live shows and adding a third hour to the Tuesday night episodes.

Current judges Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine will return for the fall cycle, but isn’t expected to judge the winter/spring season.

My POV: I like the decision to expedite the live shows. During the first season, one of the criticisms was the audition rounds were too short, this year they were far too long. Obviously the show gets its highest ratings during the blind auditions, but they have to find a way to keep that excitement going all season. Hope this pays off for NBC, but having a two-cycle a year singing competition can lead to audience burnout.  It’ll be interesting to see if The Voice and FOX’s X Factor compete against each other. With Pop icon Britney Spears rumored to be this close to signing a contract to appear on X Factor, will this be yet the latest in the battles between Christina and Britney? We’ll see…
