Vampire Diaries star and fan favorite Claire Holt has been tapped as a lead for the supernatural drama’s planned spinoff, The Originals.
The actress, who’s played original vampire Rebekah Mikaelson since the third season, has been rumored to be a part of the spinoff since its initial conception. Deadline reports negotiations with Holt ran into some issues, causing the show to do with co-star Phoebe Tonkin (Secret Circle) instead. Thankfully, everything worked out for the better. She’ll reunite with Vampire Diaries co-stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies and Tonkin on the potential series.
The network will use the April 25 episode as a backdoor pilot. Written by Vampire Diaries co-creator/executive producer Julie Plec, the episode features half-vampire/half-werewolf hybrid Klaus Michaelson (Joseph Morgan) as he returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago — and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). Klaus’ brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies) sides with Klaus’ enemies to bring him down and help him find redemption. Tonkin will her role as werewolf Haley.
Rounding out the cast is Leah Pipes as human college student Camille; Daniella Pineda and Danielle Campbell as witches Sophie and Davina, respectively.
My Take: Thank god! A spinoff about the originals wouldn’t quite be the same without the best original. Holt regularly steals the show with Rebekah’s dry sarcasm, witty one-liners and a quiet intensity that adds many layers to her tough exterior. I highly approve of this casting decision.
