‘General Hospital’ Week In Review: Women In Refrigerators

The Head and the Heart

Alexis realizes the truth about Julian.

Alexis realizes the truth about Julian.

Julian hasn’t been making a lot of good choices lately and his decision to kill Carlos is at the top of that list. The not-so-former mob boss not only murdered Carlos in cold blood but he used the dagger that killed Alexis’ mother to do it. Yikes! The Julexis Army needs a big hug right now! I don’t know how Alexis will be able to forgive him. Julian Jerome, what the hell were you thinking?!

It’s quite clear that Julian and Alexis are going to have to breakup now. This is a risky decision for the writers to make considering the popularity of the pairing. Risks can definitely have big payoffs though. Nancy Lee Grahn and Willian DeVry have been doing phenomenal with this material. Their scenes are what Emmy reels should actually look like. Not everyone could pull off the raw emotions of betrayal, fear and passion like they have been. I’d like to think that the writers decided to give them this tough story line because they knew the actors would knock it out of the park. Grahn in particular has been stellar as the woman on the verge of having her happiness shattered. I like that Alexis is being written as smart yet in love, her mind and heart both working overtime. The real question is which part of herself Alexis will chose to follow.

Julian is going to lose big time after the mess he’s created. I’m not sure that means jail time or anything like that but what he held most dear, his family with Alexis, is falling apart. His alibi for the night is a scantly clad Nina. So basically his get of jail free card looks a lot like him cheating on his wife. Neither Julian or Nina were answering Alexis’ phone calls and then when she shows up at the office, Julian is wearing a different shirt and Nina is walking around in a robe and nighty? Even if he’s able to convince Alexis that he didn’t kill Carlos, he’s going to have to explain that. I get the feeling that Nina is going to be a bit of trouble for Julian. She’s knows about his criminal activity and he’s going to need her to backup his lies.

Of course, Nina had some other visitors that night that know Julian wasn’t with her the whole time. Dillon and Kiki dropped by and sparkled before leaving for a not date; Franco showed up to seduce Nina via a How I Met Your Mother shoutout. “The Naked Man” had Barney Stinson’s results when Julian showed up. I wonder if the fact that Franco knows when Julian actually arrived at the office will be important later.

Franco makes a last attempt to win back Nina.

Things are at the end now for Franco and Nina’s courtship. I really loved this pairing so I’m sad to see it over yet at the same time I enjoy both characters on their own too. I think the writers and actors did a really good job of making their breakup respectful of their fans while showing why it was needed. They didn’t resort to cheating or magically having them fall out of love with each other or over the top misunderstandings. The reason for their breakup is grounded in reality and the door hasn’t been completely slammed shut. A clear direction for both characters has been set up as they go their separate ways. I like the teases of Franco and Liz. Roger Howarth and Rebecca Herbst have great chemistry and the idea of Jason’s enemy and rejected lover finding comfort in each other is very soapy. There hasn’t been quite as much flirtation for Nina yet but if they are moving her more towards the devious other women role with Julian, I don’t hate it. My friend Shannon also suggested that Nina and Ned could be an interesting couple. Tracy and Nina sparing would be fun to watch.

  1. While I agree that the Jason episode needed more heart, I am relieved they didn’t make it all about Sam! Jason was a great character before Sam and when he wasn’t with Sam and I don’t want to see him relegated to her sidekick!

I would have liked it to be about his children! It seemed ridiculous that Jake’s accident (or his reenacted wedding for that matter) didn’t bring back his memories but Dante did? Struck me as a last minute plot point to try to garner interest.

I also think having Jason regain his memories while he’s basically living Jason M’s life is a total waste of story.
