Gays of Our Lives: Spies Like Us

6

General Hospital (U.S.)

Wow. Is that Brad and Lucas in scenes together? It’s only been months since we last saw them in the same room. It’s shame that this is notable, but it is. So, is this the start of story for them? I don’t mind seeing Brad’s dark side, I always liked that about him. I’d like to hope this could be a little something for them to do. As long as it doesn’t end with them splitting up. But I doubt it’s the beginning of a story. GH has made it clear there’s no room for gays of any stripe in PC. Still it was nice to see them.

Hollyoaks (U.K.)

So Finn is back? It can’t be a coincidence that John Paul’s rapist is returning just as the show is writing out James Sutton. We know that someone is going to die for that exit story. I just hope the show isn’t killing off another McQueen, they’ve killed too many already. I haven’t much cared for the writing (or lack there of) for JP for the past year, but I’m going to miss him. He was one of my favorite soap characters ever. If he leaves alive at least he can come back.

People of the Valley (Wales)

Gee, Gwyneth is only marrying Sion for his money. What a shocker. I was surprised she finally admitted she was only using him.

I understand Iolo being mad about his father signing over half his house to her, it is stupid, but Iolo shouldn’t cut himself off from his dad. Like Tyler said, that’s what she wants. Soon she’ll have everything and there will no one to look out for Sion. Iolo needs to suck it up and be there to keep an eye on Gwyneth.

And I wouldn’t put it past Gwyneth to get rid of Sion at some point if she has to. She has killed before after all. Maybe that’s where this is going? She is going to try to kill Sion and Iolo has to rescue him? That could be interesting. But I still want a story for Iolo and Tyler that is not about his dad.

River City (Scotland)

Louis a total dog, but I’m really digging him. He’s got to stick around. River City has always done a pretty good job with well written gay characters and they do so here. He’s the most interesting gay character since Will. I also think that Louis and Gary have some really nice chemistry. I don’t really care if Louis winds up with Gary or Robbie. I just want Louis to be a permanent fixture in town.

Louis was obviously speaking for the fans when he said that Bob and Angus give off a lot of sexual chemistry towards each other. LOL…

Memo to Robbie: when your lover has a romantic night out with another man that’s a date.

Louis: I guess that’s what I get for reading a book. Ha! Line of the week!

I’m good with Louis in that black tank top. VERY good.

I’ve always hated Caitlin, but what she did to force Drew to move away and go to school in America shows how much she really loves him and wants to do what’s best for him. I was afraid she’d be selfish and ruin it for him so he wouldn’t leave. His crying that he didn’t want to go and her pretty much shoving him into that car was a tearjerker, a wonderfully written and acted scene. And given their ugly history that very awkward goodbye scene with Patrick and Drew made perfect sense.

I watch a lot of television, probably too much. But can you really watch too much TV? I've yet to find out. Anyway, I especially love TV when they give us positive portrayals of gays, something that has gotten better but we're still fighting for. I've written about gays in television for many years first at the much missed After Elton, then New Now Next and now at TV Source. It's kind of a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing it with you.

  1. Careful what you ask for. We’ve all been saying how Finn should have a story and got our wish with this big ol’ hot mess. I’d love a story for Iolo & Tyler, as well, but am afraid the show will revisit that business about them adopting a child. They haven’t been together long enough to entertain that thought, and it’s a direction that doesn’t interest me at all.

Emmerdale loves to saddle its gay characters with overbearing mothers. It’s not just Emma but goes back to Chas and Hazel. Can’t these guys be independent gay MEN instead of boys whose mother won’t loosen the apron strings and has to get involved in all their decisions?

I’m liking this new, happier Ben on EastEnders. It’s kinda sexy.

  2. I love Toby & Adil

  3. I’m going to take it by your review that you haven’t read the books the Shadowhunters series is based on. A little background without spoiling it for you. The Clave is VERY disapproving of homosexuality. In fact, known homosexuals are usually shunned by the Clave and have even been de-runed. So his virginity is much, much deeper than convincing himself that he’s in love with Jace.

  4. Cam is way sweeter with Jack than he ever was with Kylie. I think with Kylie he was in cocky, charmer mode the entire time. With Jack he’s had a lot of making up to do and a lot of time to ponder Jack’s absence in his life. After rewatching episodes following the whole drugs bust thing, Cam’s attempts at talking/reconnecting with Jack (pre-Jack asking for his job back) were incredibly sweet. You can see he had feelings for Jack back then even.

  5. I stopped watching hollyoaks because of ste and how awful and disgusting he was to jp who just kept being a doormat now that they’re getting close again I’m glad I stopped also I agree with you about Finn they ruined him

  6. They’re just making Finn worse and worse, and it’s bringing down every other character it touches. Can’t Emmerdale have a single gay character that doesn’t belong in jail?

I’d like to see Aaron interact with his newly returned grandmother. Had he ever met her before? I know she’s busy with Chas/Cain/Debbie/Sarah and he’s busy with the trial and the wedding, but it would be good to explore that as well.

I don’t want Ste and JP to get back together. I understood why they initially were pulled together in the aftermath of Doug’s death, but that was before Ste treated JP horribly. The only silver lining would be that Harry can get a boyfriend either his own age or who can manage to stay off the streets without Harry’s dad’s support.
