Fan favorite Vinessa Antoine, who joined General Hospital in 2014 as undercover agent turned Commissioner Jordan Ashford, will depart from the long-running ABC soap for a history making lead role in the new CBC legal drama, Diggstown.

The Canadian-born actress will star in the title role of Marcie Diggs, a star corporate lawyer who reconsidered her priorities after her beloved aunt commits suicide following a malicious prosecution. Landing at a legal aide office in Darthmouth, Nova Scotia, Marcie is driven by one thing – to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system. It’s a historic casting as Antoine will be the first Black Canadian actress to star in a primetime drama on network television in Canada.

“We’re very fortunate to have Vinessa give life to the tenacious and complex character of Marcie Diggs,” said creator, executive producer, and showrunner Floyd Kane.

Landing the role of Maggie Diggs means Vinessa Antoine would have to vacate the role she created on General Hospital. Though the actress would have preferred to do both, it wouldn’t have worked out to ABC’s benefit. The actress announced her departure July 16, 2018 on Twitter in a series of tweets:

“There are so many people that God put into place who are directly and indirectly responsible for my time General Hospital. You know who you are. I thank you. I came into this world as an artist. My job is to create and inspire. I hope I did that a little in playing Jordan Ashford. I believe that I have taken her as far as I can. To clarify, as negotiations for Diggstown were underway, although I am open to stay and play in Port Charles, I was told by my reps that General Hospital felt that my character would be off the canvas for too long for me to continue playing her. With that, we decided to mutually part ways. It’s time to make room for more women of color in prominent roles on television. I am grateful to assist that by starting this new chapter in my journey. I hope you’ll all come along. I feel blessed. Be well. Xo”

Where does Vinessa Antoine’s exit leave Jordan? With Jordan set to marry boyfriend Curtis Ashford (played by Donnell Turner), and Port Charles in need a top cop, will the series recast?

TV Source Magazine has contacted a rep for General Hospital, though typically the series has a policy of not addressing contractual matters.

TV Source wishes Ms. Antoine all the best as she sets forth to make television history! We’re rooting for you.
