On Thursday morning, The CW revealed their Fall 2016 schedule to advertisers at the annual Upfront presentations in New York City.
In an unsurprising move, the network decided to lead four of its five nights off with superhero programming. Since The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow are the three current highest rated shows on the network, it seems like good sense to retain their leadoff spots on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.
Supergirl will also keep the Monday night leadoff spot it occupied on CBS. Again, this seems like a logical decision. On a conference call with reporters, CW President Mark Pedowitz acknowledged that while they do expect the show’s ratings to be lower than they were on CBS, they still think the relocated drama will earn one of their top ratings’ spots next season.
The Vampire Diaries will also keep its Friday leadoff spot, but The Originals is being held for midseason. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will slide into the Friday at 9 p.m. slot. Its former night partner Jane the Virgin will keep its Monday at 9 p.m. perch behind Supergirl.
Supernatural is on the move once more to a new superhero pairing. The show will kick off its 13th season on Thursdays at 9 p.m. after Legends of Tomorrow.
Reign, iZombie, and The 100 will join The Originals in the held for midseason stable.
In what may be the schedule’s biggest head-scratcher: the network will be holding Riverdale, its buzziest pilot, for midseason. The strategy did work last season for Legends of Tomorrow, but it didn’t work out quite as well for Containment. Even with ratings higher than half the renewed shows, Containment still received the ax after its late bow.
The network’s other two pilots, No Tomorrow, described as a “smart, charming romantic comedy”, will air Tuesdays at 9 p.m. after The Flash. Finally, Frequency, described as a “high-stakes drama”, will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. after Arrow.
At this time, no episode counts are being released for any of the shows per Pedowitz.
