DC Comics has announced the official name of its upcoming subscription streaming service set to launch later this year: DC Universe. According to a press release, “DC Universe is a first-of-its kind, immersive digital experience designed just for DC fans.” While details are still limited, membership to DC Universe will include exclusive access to at least four original series: Titans, Swamp Thing, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Harley Quinn.
Based on the Teen Titans comic series, Titans comes from the team of Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, et. al), Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery, Batman and Robin), and Geoff Johns (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad).
Starring Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Nightwing; Teagan Croft as Raven; Anna Diop as Koriand’r/Starfire; and Ryan Potter as Garfield Logan/Beast Boy the series will serve as the flagship for DC Universe.
According to a press release from DC Comics, “Titans follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others. Titans is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.”
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Verheiden (Falling Skies, Hemlock Grove) and Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle) will serve as showrunners of Swamp Thing while James Wan (upcoming Aquaman film, The Conjuring) will executive produce the series.
Swamp Thing follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane, who returns to her childhood home Houma, Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. She develops a relationship with scientist Alec Holland, only to have him tragically taken away. Abby will discover both horrifying and wondrous secrets in the swamp — and learns her potential love might not be dead after all.
Young Justice: Outsiders is the highly-anticipated third season of the animated series, which aired on Cartoon Network for its first two seasons. According to Comic Book Resources, this third outing will run for 26 episodes and feature a variety of DC characters including Static, Kid Flash, Robin, Wonder Girl, Spoiler, Blue Beetle, Thirteen, Arrowette, Arsenal and Beast Boy.
Unfortunately, not much is known about the animated Harley Quinn series at the moment. DC is reportedly courting Harley’s live-action movie portrayer Margot Robbie to lend her voice to the role.
Although no official date has been announced, DC Universe should launch sometime in 2018.
