Watch out, Big Apple! Josie McCoy is coming to town! Riverdale star Ashleigh Murray has signed on for a lead role in the CW’s spinoff pilot Katy Keene. Riverdale creator/executive producer Robert Aguierre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi will write and executive produce.
Set in the Archie Comics TV universe, Katy Keene (based on the comic series of the same name) follows the lives and loves of four iconic twenty-something Archie Comics characters – including fashion legend-to-be Katy Keene and Josie McCoy – as they chase their dreams in New York City. Described as a musical dramedy, it will depict the ups and downs of the artists as they attempt careers on Broadway, the runway and recording studio.
Murray is the first to be cast. If the pilot is picked up to series, the actress would depart Riverdale. Set years into the future, Josie relocates to the concrete jungle where dreams are made of in the hopes of being the next Diana Ross!
CW president Mark Pedowitz announced during the Television Critics Association panel last week there would be no backdoor pilot/crossover episode to introduce the new series due to Katy Keene taking place in a different time.
Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter and Jon Goldwater will also executive produce the series. Berlanti Productions will produce with Warner Bros. Television.
