Daytime Emmy winner Camryn Grimes, star of CBS’ The Young and the Restless, came out on social media during an interaction with her fans.
Grimes, 30, was expressing interest in taking over the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman on The CW’s Batwoman, writing “Can I be the next @CWBatwoman??” The role was vacated earlier this week by star Ruby Rose, who was reportedly unhappy with work conditions. The network announced they would recast and was looking for out LGBTQ actresses to take over the role.
A fan responded with “As AMAZING as this would be and as much as I support this idea, I think they’re looking for an out LGBTQ actress for the role.” Grimes then replied with a declarative “I’m bisexual”.
The actress would later explain in a tweet, “My bf is bisexual and it was during conversations with him that it just clicked. Honestly feel stupid I didn’t come to the conclusion sooner lol.”
It’s fitting that Grimes’ announcement would come a few days before the start of Pride month. On behalf of TV Source Magazine, and as a fellow bisexual, I extend a heartfelt congratulations to Camryn for sharing this part of herself to the public. Visibility in the LGBTQ community is so important, and Camryn’s announcement could significantly impact the lives of others looking to find who they are.
Grimes has been a soap star since the age of 7. She made her debut in 1997 as Cassie Newman, daughter of supercouple Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon Newman (Sharon Case). She became the youngest actress to win an Emmy when she took home the win for Outstanding Younger Actress in 2000. After departing Y&R in 2005, she returned to the soap a decade later as Cassie’s twin sister Mariah. In recent years, Mariah has been visible as one of the only same-sex female relationships in US soaps. Her pairing with Tessa Porter (played by Cait Fairbanks) is very popular among fans and has earned the soap nominations for GLAAD awards for the relationships portrayal.
