‘Smallville’ star Kristen Kreuk returns to The CW.
Kreuk – who for seven years played Clark Kent’s first love Lana Lang on Smallville – has landed the leading role in the network’s upcoming pilot for Beauty and the Beast, reports Deadline. The modern-day retelling is loosely based on 1980s CBS series of the same name starring Linda Hamilton and Sons of Anarchy‘s Ron Pearlman.
The Canadian actress will play Catherine, an NYPD detective “haunted by witnessing her mother’s murder nine years ago and the killer’s quick demise at the hands of a beast.” The “beast” would be Vincent Koslow, the survivor of a military experiment gone wrong. Sounds good right? Here’s where they lost me — Vincent is a superhero, and Catherine will help protect his identity.
Kruek is best known for her seven year run on Smallville as Lana Lang, the first love of Clark Kent. She departed the series at the end of season 7, returning as a guest star for five episodes to wrap up her storyline in season 8. Her other credits include NBC’s Chuck, and the 2009 box office flop Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
CBS Television Studios is producing. Jennifer Levin (Without a Trace) and Sherri Cooper (Brothers and Sisters) helm the project, and will serve as executive producers alongside original series creator Ron Koslow, and Paul J. Witt, C. Anthony Thomas and Bill Haber.
(Correction – our original report mistakenly listed Linda Hamilton as Linda Wagner)
