Though I know there are plenty that would argue otherwise, Carly and Sonny’s bedroom romp does not feel like a love story to me. A bad habit perhaps but the motivation behind it lacks romantic desire. Maybe this is a pacing issue. Sonny has gone from being 110% committed to Connie, to Connie’s cousin Olivia, to cryptsex with Ava, and now to Carly’s bed with no time in between. It’s hard for me to see a character who is so fickle in love as a viable romantic option.
Of course Sonny isn’t the only one with a fair-weather heart. Ever since Carly tore into town in the ‘90s determined to steal her mother’s husband, she has had boundary issues when it comes to relationships.
Why does Carly always cheat? Is her latest fling just a result of Sonny’s irresistible dimples? I hope the reason is a bit deeper than that. Carly has always been a bit destructive and Sonny has a way of enabling that. It’s possible Carly and Sonny are on just an endless loop of falling in and out of love but I wonder if a bulk of their attraction is based on familiarity.
Carly and Sonny have a long volatile history together. Both characters are their own worse enemy and their relationship matches this with its self-destructive nature. These two have done a lot to each other including lying, cheating, and even a shot to the head. All good reasons why they should avoid each other like the plague.
This latest reconciliation of sorts has originated from Sonny’s murder of long time foe AJ Quartermaine and Carly’s willingness to help cover up the crime. Sonny has murdered their son’s biological father, had sex on his grave, let an innocent man take the fall for the crime, imprisoned his other son’s pregnant girlfriend who may or may not be pregnant with his child, etc. Carly is not only okay with Sonny’s recent activity but she never misses the opportunity to tell her children that Sonny is a great father. I may get on board as the story continues to played out but at the moment this affair just seems rather callous.
It will be interesting to see how much regret (if any) Carly will eventually feel for her latest act of adultery. If she loses enough as a result of her recklessness then perhaps she’ll finally get the push she needs to change her ways once and for all. Or maybe she’ll finally embrace the fact that she prefers to have a guy on the side. Right now she has the potential to either grow or stay the same. It will be interesting to see which road she takes.
