‘General Hospital’ Week In Review: The Art Of Letting Go

It’s About Forgiveness

I’m starting to think that part of Griffin’s purpose on GH is to help tie up some loose ends after things got a little too murder-y on “General Mobster”. Their are a lot of characters that are guilty of taking another’s life walking around free in Port Charles, something that has fueled violent vendettas, states of depression and stuck some great characters in corners from which they have yet to work their way out. Griffin’s solution to this chaos is to forgive. Forgiveness is arguably a better solution that forgetting via bad rewrites.

Screen Shot 2016-03-27 at 1.48.22 PMAnna has a lot of anger towards the individuals who were a part of Duke’s murder as well as herself. She takes out that anger on Griffin by accusing him of not being trustworthy when he says he thinks Duke’s murderer should be forgiven. His own lack of anger is confusing to Anna. If he is Duke’s son why wouldn’t he have hatred for Carlos? Griffin tells Anna to do a DNA test to prove that he is who he says. I don’t doubt that he is Duke’s son and I’m sure that the DNA test will prove that. I think the shocker will be his mother’s identity.

Sonny has a very similar view on the Carlos situation as Anna does. He wants the former Jerome hitman dead. Griffin also tells him to let it go. While I think that Anna can do this, “killing” Carlos weighed too heavy on her soul before, I’m a little more skeptical about the Teflon Don. Sonny is a pretty spiteful person who has looked at revenge as the righteous answer on numerous different occasions. I’m not sure he would ever understand that walking away from a fight is better that charging into a war. With Carlos’ reappearance, I have to wonder if Sonny is going to strike and who will get in the crossfire this time.

Another interesting Griffin moment last week was when he turned down Maxie’s invitation to coffee. Griffin refused to be a part of Crimson’s real men issue and spend time alone with Maxie because she has a boyfriend and he doesn’t want the temptation. That’s something that happens…well never on a soap opera. Some suspect that Griffin used to be a priest. I think the story is a little more complex than that. We know that Griffin has been the victim of violence because of his bullet scar. He mentioned that past mistakes shouldn’t be repeated. Though it seemed like he was cooly checking Maxie on her past infidelities, I think he was talking about himself. Perhaps, he gave into temptation once and the affair lead to a violent altercation with the wronged man.

Holding On And Setting Free

Two of my favorite couples on GH had significant turning points this week as they were faced with some life choices. In the case of Nina and Franco, the lovebirds’ relationship is holding on by a thread. Franco was finally straight forward with Nina about not wanting to be a parent. He doesn’t want the stress of being responsible for a child and just wants things to stay the way they are now. He asks Nina to give up her dream of motherhood and she agrees. My heart broke a little bit for Nina, knowing that she was putting her needs aside for a man again. At the same time though, I can see Franco’s point of view in the situation. The fact that Nina works a lot has been made clear especially when we saw that Franco didn’t get the chance to have a conversation with her prior to her doctor’s appointment. Nowadays, it’s a rarity when a woman doesn’t have both a career and a family so I’m not saying that Nina wanting that too unreasonable. But if she works more than Franco does, that means he may be spending more time alone with the baby which could be a large part of his anxiety. However, it still seems really unfair to expect Nina to put aside her desire to have a child because of his fears even if he did feel bad about it (which he clearly did).

Screen Shot 2016-03-23 at 8.14.33 PMAfter Franco and Nina agree to not have a baby and just enjoy their current happiness, Nina still goes through with the doctor’s exam. Is she going to do something nutty like not tell Franco she can get pregnant and trick him into making a baby with her? That’s definitely one possibility but I don’t think this is a baby crazy story. So far this tale has been grounded in a lot of reality and I don’t really need that to changed. Like flipping a coin, I think that Nina is going to let fate decide her future with Franco. If she can’t have a baby, she’ll just enjoy running Crimson and have a satisfying love life with her boyfriend. If she can have a baby though, she’ll have to decide whether to pursue being a mother even if it means leaving Franco. It will be interesting to see what path she takes.

Nina isn’t the only woman in love who has tough choices to make about what she wants. Kristina is very attracted to Parker but, even though the feeling appears to be mutual, she can’t really act on that attraction. Parker being a married woman isn’t the only hurdle. The fact that Kristina doesn’t understand her sexuality and is having a tough time defining herself is also a major obstacle. Parker and Kristina did share a kiss but Parker isn’t going to leave her wife and start a relationship with a confused student. Kristina has been able to talk to Molly and is able to write about her feelings in her journal but she may want to try talking to a therapist or better yet her mother. I think Alexis would be supportive if given the chance.

Sonny’s reaction is the most unpredictable. I think that Kristina’s biggest fear is that Sonny will just be dismissive and disappointed. Kristina had a close call when she found out that Sonny sent Max to track down her professor. She was able to call everything off before it was discovered that the teacher in question is a woman. Eventually though Kristina is going to have to figure out what she wants and, if she really wants to be with Parker or any other woman, she’ll need to be upfront with her parents.
