J.J Abrams, the man that gave us the thrilling dramas Lost and Alias is back again with Fringe, a procedural thriller that blurs the line between the possible and unimaginable. Starring Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop), Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham), John Noble( Walter Bishop) and Blair Brown (Nina Sharp), this thriller centers around rookie FBI agent Olivia and Special Agent John Scott (Mark Valley) investigating a string of paranormal incidents, including a plane landing at Boston’s Logan airport where there is no one alive in the plane. When John is almost killed, Olivia is desperate to find someone to help her. Her search ends when she finds Dr. Walter Bishop. One problem. He’s been institutionalized for the last seventeen years.
Enter Dr.Bishop’s estranged son Peter. Dr. Bishop won’t help anyone unless Peter comes along. Peter, himself a genius would rather gamble than have anything to do with his father. But he gets pulled in to help Olivia out. Dr Bishop is way beyond genius and in the 1970’s, studied the paranormal extensively which led him to being institutionalized. The trio soon discovers that the mystery of the plane is a small piece of a much larger puzzle. They discover the Pattern, a string of paranormal incidents. This will be a theme throughout the series but there will also be stand alone episodes as well.
According to Abrams, there is a palpable chemistry between Torv and Jackson. Both of their characters are relatable and personable characters. It’s a long way from Dawson’s Creek for Jackson, but he is very happy to sink his teeth into this role. Fringe promises to be a little bit X-Files and a little bit Lost with just a tad bit of Hitchcock mixed in. Tune in Tuesdays at 8 PM on FOX to catch what looks like a surefire hit.
