General Hospital has begun pairing down its massive cast with a change in contract status for three of its stars. Kelly Thiebaud (Britt Westbourne), John J. York (Mac Scorpio) and Marc Anthony Samuel (Felix Dubois) have all been bumped to recurring.
News of Thiebaud’s change in status came over the weekend, in a story broken by Daytime Confidential. The actress, who joined GH in 2012, has opted not to renew her contract with the show. Though she’ll appear on a recurring basis in the interim, Soaps in Depth reports Thiebaud may be exiting the series permanently. According to reports, the actress has expressed a desire to pursue work in primetime and film.
Samuel’s airtime has dried up since the end of his the love triangle between Felix, Lucas (Ryan Carnes) and Brad (Parry Shen); and with best friend Sabrina (Teresa Castillo) not having much to do, neither does Felix.
York’s Mac has been used as a supporting character since head writer Ron Carlivati took over the show in 2012; playing pivotal roles in the lives of his ‘daughters’ Maxie (Kirsten Storms) and Robin (Kimberly McCullough), marrying Felicia (Kristina Wagner) and running the Floating Rib.
Recurring isn’t the ‘death sentence’ it used to be, as all soaps have begun utlizing their recurring actors on a better capacity than in the past. GH has a large crop of recurring stars weaved in and out of storylines, including Jackie Zeman (Bobbie), Ian Buchanan (Duke), Ryan Carnes, Kathleen Gati (Dr. Obrecht), Robin Mattson (Heather), Kin Shriner (Scotty) and Wally Kurth (Ned), just to name a few.
