CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful has been nominated by The GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Daily Drama. It was the only soap (and rightfully so) to be nominated in the category.
Entering its 28th year, the GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
The Bold and the Beautiful features Maya Avant-Forrester, a transwoman, played by contract cast member Karla Mosley. Maya’s storyline was a main focus in 2015, which featured the reveal of her being trans and the impact her disclosure would (or wouldn’t) have on her relationship with Rick Forrester (played by Jacob Young). The soap won a GLAAD award for the story at the 27th GLAAD Awards. In 2016, the soap embarked on a surrogacy storyline involving Rick and Maya’s decision to have children, as well as Maya’s continued career as a model.
With four American daytime soaps on the air, only two, B&B and NBC’s Days of our Lives, prominently feature LGBT characters in storylines. ABC’s General Hospital has two gay characters who often don’t air months at a time; CBS’ The Young and the Restless have no LGBT characters.
Congrats to The Bold and the Beautiful for continuing to showcase diversity and equal representation of modern society. It’s one thing to have token characters for the sake of checking a diversity box, it’s another to truly invest in telling the stories of those still underrepresented.
The GLAAD Awards will be held on April 1 in Los Angeles and May 6 in New York.
