Soap star Daniel Goddard shocked fans today by announcing on social media he will be leaving The Young and the Restless…and it doesn’t seem like it was his choice.

Goddard has been a cast member since 2007, portraying Australian con-man Ethan “Cane” Ashby. He briefly departed the series in 2011 after being fired but was later rehired due to fan outcry.

In a message cross posted on Twitter and Instagram, he writes: “It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that I will no longer be part of the cast of the Young and the Restless. I am as shocked and gutted as you are… I almost didn’t post but I felt that the most loyal and loving fans as an actor could wish for deserved to know and watch the last story arc knowing the rich meaning behind it. I am forever grateful for the 13 years I have been a part of the Y&R family… but sadly it seems that without Neil and Lily there just is no Cane.”

Last August, we ran a report indicating the plans to phase out the Ashbys following the exit of Christel Khalil. First Lily was written out, then she and Cane’s children Charlie and Mattie, and now Cane.

The Beastmaster actor has languished in the background since his long-time leading lady Christel Khalil chose to leave the soap in 2018. A potential pairing between Cane and Victoria (played by Amelia Heinle) was cut short amid a creative change. It seemed a summer romance was in the cards with Cane embarking on a new journey with the beloved Traci Abbott (played by Beth Maitland) but alas, that too was abruptly ended. In recent weeks, Cane has been inserted into Devon’s (Bryton James) inheritance storyline that has Cane named as the true heir to the late Katherine Chancellor’s fortune.

The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS.
