'True Grit' Takes Over Top Spot At Box Office

‘True Grit’ overtakes ‘Little Fockers’ for #1.

“True Grit” took over the #1 spot at the box office this weekend, bumping “Little Fockers” to #2 after spending 3 weeks at #1. Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch” and Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Song” opened to modest success.

The western is steadily gaining audiences each weekend, with an estimated $15 million and has collected a strong $110.4 million in 19 day.  The film has surpassed the final grossing of “Unforgiven” and “Maverick.” “Little Fockers” fell to #2 after spending 3 weeks at #1.  The filmed earned $13.8 million for the weekend, and so far has made $124 million in 19 days.

Nicolas Cage’s medieval film, “Season of the Witch” entered at #3 earning $10.7 million. The film about a 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague, opened higher than Cage’s recent flops like “The Wicker Man,” “Bangkok Dangerous” and “Next.”

Disney’s “Tron Legacy” dropped 48 percent, despite earning $9.8 million and slipping to 4th place. “Black Swan” entered the top 5 since it’s released and drew an estimated $8.35 million. The psychological thriller has earned a total of $61.5 million in 38 days and distributor FOX Searchlight plans to expand it to over 2,000 locations in January. Coming in at #6 is Gwyneth Paltrow musical drama, “Country Song,” collecting $7.3 million.
