Best and Worst of 2008: Soap Opera Edition

Most Disappointing

Guiding Light – They had the chance to turn 2008 into a great year for them, instead they continued to wallow in mediocrity with their lame, plot driven storylines, inconsistent writing and focus on characters no one gives a damn about. Then there was the new production model that was overly hyped, only for it to be a major failure. We give Executive producer Ellen Wheeler credit for at least trying to be proactive in saving Guiding Light money and trying to streamline production, but building cheap, claustrophobia inducing sets shot on shaky cams couldn’t possibly have looked good on paper, let alone be carried out.

Shooting outside is fine too, as long as you don’t shoot from 30 yards away and in-between tree branches just so you can say “Oh look what we can do.” Thankfully the show listened to the fans and improved on their shooting techniques and other annoying tidbits.

Guiding Light isn’t a bad show by any means. The actors are a huge reason why the show is even remotely watchable. The cast of GL are troopers. They do what they’re told even if they’re unhappy with it. Our hope for 2009 is the writers step up their game and gives these actors something better to do.

Best Triangle
We couldn’t find one triangle that stood out in a good way.

Worst Triangle
The worst triangle of 2008 comes up in a tie.

First up, the Bold and the Beautiful’s Katie/Nick/Bridget. Bridge battles her mother (Brooke) over Nick, finally lands him only to lose out to her aunt Katie? Katie’s dying wish was to go away with Nick, she screws him and ends up pregnant? Contrived foolishness to say the least, it was absurd.

Also coming in with the worst triangle is All My Children’s Annie/Greenlee/Ryan(and to some extent Aiden). Greenlee came back to town in 07 sniffing after Ryan, got rejected, became town pariah and hooked up with Pine Valley’s resident hunk Aiden. So what’s the problem? In 2008 the writers decided “Hey, let’s tease the hell out of a Ryan and Greenlee reunion!” After the REAL Greenlee (thanks ABC) returned in the form of Rebecca Budig, fans pretty much knew what was in store for them. Ryan gets shot in the head by Zach & Josh’s crazy ex Hannah Nichols, wakes up and remembers nothing of the past few years. No Annie, no Emma, hell he thought he was still in love with Kendall!

Greenlee was Ryan’s rock, she was his confidant, and they shared close moments together. All the while Ryan and Greenlee’s significant others felt like they were on the outside looking in. Their connection was so strong, their love was unfaltering. Ryan and Annie never stopped loving each other? A good triangle is one that doesn’t project who the “endgame” is. Viewers could figure out from the beginning that Ryan & Greenlee would end up together.

The only upside from this terrible triangle is the amazing performances from Melissa Claire Egan. She’s a shoe-in for an Emmy nomination and a shoe in for TVSource Magazine’s upcoming awards.

Runner Up: As The World Turns’ Carly/Holden/Lily triangle. They repay an Emmy winner with that? Oy vey. Also: Days of Our Lives’ Chelsea/Daniel/Kate – This is one of those things that should just never happen again. A granddaughter in a triangle with her grandmother?
