Best and Worst of 2008: Soap Opera Edition

Best Bodies

Given the amazing levels of hotness eradiating from the stars on our TV screens, we couldn’t just pick one:

– Brandon Beemer (Owen, B&B) – If we had a Soap Hunk of the year category it would be him. The picture on the left speaks for itself.  Who wouldn’t want to work with him each and every day? Brandon has the most beautiful eyes we’ve ever seen on a soap star. When we’re not getting lost in his eyes, we’re trying to wipe the drool from our mouths. Days of Our Lives’ loss was surely The Bold and the Beautiful’s gain. B&B takes place in sunny Los Angeles; they don’t need a reason to have Brandon walk around with no shirt. Any excuse B&B can find to not put him in a top is fine by us. Hell, better yet, if you just focus the camera on his body while everyone else is talking, that’ll be fine too. Who needs story? Screw not having a hunk of the year category, Brandon’s our unofficial hunk of 2008!

Also rounding out our list:

  • David Fumero (Cristian, OLTL) – Facilitator of sundials, we praise you!
  • Tracy E. Bregman (Lauren, Y&R) –Perfection is seriously an understatement.
  • Mark Lawson (Brody, OLTL) – There are no words to describe his perfectly sculpted body….actually there is, it’s perfect. And he can act too. That’s always a plus.
  • Kelly Monaco (Sam, GH) – Kelly Monaco is gorgeous, talented and did we mention gorgeous? Given Sam’s love of hot tubs, it’s no secret that Kelly would have to keep up her body in order to fit in those bikinis. Thank you Bob Guza for giving us Sam’s hot tub, even if there’s only one guy we’d prefer to ever enter. LuSam needs a rubber ducky.

Dumbest Thing Said By A Soap Executive
There were a couple of idiotic things said this year by soap executives. It would be fun to list them all, but this one stands out to us.

“No one is above recasting. No one is the center of the wheel. They’re all spokes. If we blow a spoke, the wheel will keep turning and we replace it,” says Days of Our Lives Owner & Executive Producer Ken Corday. It’s one thing for fans to know it’s the truth, it’s another for you to come out and say it.

Smartest Thing Said By A Soap Executive
“Our lesbians are cuter,” says ABC Daytime President Brian Frons. Truer words were never spoken.

Best Use of Veteran Cast
We could have given this to the Young and the Restless; instead we decided to hand this one to All My Children. David Canary and Susan Lucci are epic.

Worst Use of Veteran Cast
Days of Our Lives – Hey Salem….when did the fountain of youth spring up in Salem Place? There are too many talented vets with nothing to do. High episode counts don’t count as a story.

Biggest Scandals of 2008

  • Days of Our Lives’ backstage shenanigans – the sad part is, it was better than what was on-screen.
  • Days of Our Lives fires Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn – Call it a “rest”. Call it a “break”. Call it whatever you want but to us it’s called getting a pink slip. Deidre and Drake are synonymous with Days of Our Lives and for them to have been given the axe is unacceptable. There are plenty of stories to tell for John & Marlena, and wrapping up their story with a quick wedding and ushering them out of town does not count as payoff damn it.
  • As The World Turns – Martha Byrne Out, Noelle Beck In – ATWT’s recasts the role of Lily after contract negotiations break down with Martha Byrne. ATWT’s treatment of Byrne was unacceptable. All she asked for was the same amount of episodes she had the year before and she couldn’t get that? This is the same woman who voluntarily took pay cuts in order to continue working on the show and they couldn’t give her this one thing in return.
