Now that ABC’s schedule is set for the 2014-2015 season, learn more about the new dramas the network ordered for the midseason. American Crime, from Academy Award winner John Ridley, is a gritty drama examining the personal lives of the players involved in a racially charged trial as their worlds are turned upside down.
Russ Stokie (Timothy Hutton) is an honest but average guy working at a big-box retailer in Arizona who has made great pains to reconnect with his now adult sons, Matt and Mark, and speaks with the latter — a war veteran — every week. Barb Skokie (Felicity Huffman) is Russ’ stoic ex-wife who raised her two sons, Mark and Matt, alone in public housing while her husband was off gambling. She still resents living as the only single white woman in a racially charged environment and being treated accordingly by the other occupants.
All over the news are reports about a young couple in Modesto, California, who were attacked in their home. Matt Skokie, a war vet, was killed, and his wife, Lily, is unconscious, barely hanging on. Both sets of parents are at her bedside hoping for a miracle while four suspects are about to be arrested. The case sends shock waves into the community stirring up tensions across racial lines in this gritty drama—from the point of view of the victims.
Determined to hold someone accountable for her son Matt’s murder, Barb plans to stay close to the investigation and get answers. She’s removed, dismissive and cool in her dealings with Russ, and she has no qualms about giving statements to the press if that will help keep the heat on Modesto PD to find the killer.
