‘The Originals’ Review: ‘I Love You, Goodbye’

The next Klaus and Elijah scene raised the tension to the usual epic levels as the brothers went in on each other in a way that only people who know your every weakness can. Elijah refused to allow Klaus to harm Jackson and called him out for being paranoid and possibly jealous that there’s a chance Jackson would be a better father to Hope than he was (low blow). Klaus shot back by bringing up Elijah’s recent mental defects and wanted to know how his time with Cami was, considering the risk Klaus took leaving her alone with him (and let’s acknowledge Klaus’ possessiveness of Cami). Elijah was more or less amused at this point and again vowed he would not stand by and let Klaus take away Jackson as long as he made Hayley happy. As much as I don’t like seeing them fight, these scenes were so good because these two always bring it.

Klaus heads up to the nursery and lingers in the doorway to watch Cami with Hope. She sees him and he explains that he heard her crying. Cami thinks she’s just teething and tells him she seems to be happy there. She asks Klaus if he wants to hold her, but he doesn’t take her just yet. Cami knows him well enough to put the pieces together, even if she doesn’t know that he’s plotting murder. She tells him “happy mom, happy dad, happy baby”. It might have only been a short scene (too short), but it was what Klaus needed to snap out of his funk. He took the baby downstairs, presented her to the room, asked the pack to protect her and then toasted Jackson and Hayley. When he caught Elijah’s eye as he watched them, Klaus got that look in his eyes again, but this time, he wasn’t planning murder. Instead, he invited Jackson and Hayley to live at the compound to ruin Elijah’s life. Total dick move, but it’s so very Klaus to be this immature and vindictive that I can’t even be mad (but poor Elijah).

After the wedding parade, Kol finally confesses the truth to Davina and he’s in bad shape. Davina and Rebekah get to work for a last minute effort, but Finn’s spell blocks them. There’s no time to find another body and they don’t have a spell to do that so Kol asks Rebekah to give him a moment with Davina. Again, praise to Sharman and Sellers for the look they exchange that says everything two siblings that have spent 1,000 years together could communicate in a matter of seconds. Kol tells Davina he owes her a dance and offers her his hand (just go ahead and start crying from now until the end of the hour).

Back at the compound, Hayley goes to check on Elijah (see what I mean about this not being over). He points out that she has everything she wanted and he’s going to move out and help Marcel with his vampire community to makes sure they get the “correct” instructions (no one can casually insult someone who’s not even around to hear it like Elijah Mikaelson). Hayley feels terrible that Elijah has to move out and tells him she didn’t know what Klaus was planning (again, Hayley’s concerned for Elijah and his feelings, no matter how much she says it’s over, actions always speak louder). Rebekah interrupts and then she and Elijah go to the nursery to tell Klaus that Kol’s not going to make it through the night. As the Mikaelson siblings rush out of the compound, Marcel catches sight of Rebekah and seems to put the pieces together. Even though I’m not a huge fan of the Marcel/Rebekah relationship, I’m looking forward to seeing where these two go now that Rebekah’s in a witch body.

In the cemetery, Davina is crying as she and Kol dance. He comments on how lovely the stars are and she doesn’t appreciate his joking, but he tells her that he’s not. Somewhere under the same stars, a guy is dancing with a girl and he’s got all the time in the world and he hates him (seriously my heart cannot take how much this hurts). Kol tells Davina he wants to be alone for the next part and as he starts to walk away, Elijah calls out and tells him that’s not possible. Kol turns and finds his siblings behind him and Klaus reminds him that “always and forever is not something you can weasel out of.” This is my favorite moment of the entire episode. It’s devastating and awful because Kol is dying and I hate that, but he’s not going to be alone. All he’s ever wanted was for his siblings to care about him the way he sees them caring about each other and now he has that too (seriously show, how can you do this?).

At the compound, Jackson and Hayley are feeling the awkward wedding night moment after the guests have departed. Jackson offers to just hang out and watch Hope sleep. Hayley thanks him again for being so understanding about everything and he reminds her that he loves her. Hayley admits that’s the first time anyone’s ever said that to her and she didn’t just marry him for the pack or because it was the right thing to do – she married him for her. The two share another kiss and obviously my shipper bias hates this, but I can see why Hayley’s making these choices. Jackson is a good guy and he probably is the right choice for her and definitely the safer choice so why shouldn’t she try to make it work and have more than an ‘in name only’ marriage for the rest of her life? I can’t fault her for this and it probably helps that I’m pretty sure Jackson won’t last the rest of the season (and for what it’s worth, I do love Nathan Parsons and my wishing for Jackson’s demise has nothing to do with him).

Davina tries one final spell as Kol’s siblings take turns holding him. He confesses this was all he ever wanted in his life and Rebekah promises that they’ll consecrate his body so his spirit will remain with the French Quarter ancestors. She vows to stay in her current body until she can find a way to bring him back. This is something else that confuses me (it’s always witch stuff). Can Kol only come back in this body since Finn trapped him in it or will that spell die with Kaleb’s body and Kol will only be able to come back in a different body? Obviously I prefer the former, but I have a feeling if we ever see Kol Mikaelson in present day again, it’ll be a new actor in the role, which is a shame. After he final spell attempt failed, Kol took Davina’s hand and said he wasn’t scared and then he was gone. There are not enough words to describe my heartbreak so I’m not even going to try. I hate that this happened, but the scenes were so moving and all of the actors involved brought their A-games. Thank you, Daniel Sharman for sharing your version of Kol with us (let’s resume crying now).

Finally, we’re back to Finn and Freya (did anyone else forget they were in the episode?). More confusing witch business: her pendant was what let her bring him back to life and she gave it to him to keep him safe from Elijah, but I don’t really understand how it works. Even though I’m mad at Finn for killing Kol, I do like that Freya loves and protects him since none of his other siblings seem to have ever cared about him. Freya makes it clear they’ll have to protect each other from Dahlia. She explains that Dahlia was drawn to her magic when she took her and that’s how she’ll find Hope too. Freya insists Dahlia will come and take what’s hers as the scene flips to Hayley and Hope in the nursery. I don’t know about anyone else, but I cannot wait for Dahlia to arrive so we can see where everyone’s loyalties truly are.

An episode this draining needs to be followed by a hiatus to let the viewers recover from our heartache so we’ve got two weeks without the show before it returns March 9. To the surprise of no one, Klaus wants to claim the werewolf army as his own and Hayley’s not okay with that.
