The CW’s Riverdale has cast 80s sweetheart Molly Ringwald in the recurring role of Mary Andrews, the mother of Archie (KJ Apa).
Riverdale, based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, is described as a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash) executive produces the series.
Mary left Riverdale, and her family — husband Fred (Luke Perry) and son Archie — to follow her dreams. She returns to town in the middle of a family crisis, reconnecting with Fred, Archie and former high school friends Hermione (Marisol Nichols) and Alice (Madchen Amick).
Molly Ringwald will appear in episodes 10 and 11.
Known for her starring roles in pop culture film faves The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, Riverdale isn’t Ringwald’s first TV series. She had a series regular role in the former ABC Family/Freeform drama The Secret Live of the American Teenager and most recently Bravo’s Odd Mom Out.
Riverdale premieres January 26, 2017.
