The recent addition of Fox News’ Megyn Kelly’s new talk show to NBC’s daytime line up has had many in the industry, as well as fans, pondering the fate of the network’s lone remaining soap opera Days Of Our Lives. The daytime drama is in its 51st season with discussions in process for a 52nd.
According to Deadline, this next season could be DAYS’ last. While Kelly’s new show is rumored to be taking over an hour from Today, word is since DAYS occupies a daytime hour owned by the network its time slot could still be under consideration because it has not been renewed for next season. Conversations about another season of DAYS are currently ongoing. Deadline reports the future of the long-running NBC soap is not tied to Kelly’s show, and renewal chances are “about 60-40 in favor of renewal”.
“We haven’t made decisions, but we like that show,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt told Deadline at TCA. “I think we will know more in couple of months. As they age, these shows diminish, there is a lot of delayed viewing and very little linear viewing anymore, you have to keep looking at that.”
My Take: The once highly popular DAYS has struggled creatively and financially in recent years. The fact that its renewal isn’t a guarantee comes as no surprise. However, the network has seen the value in keeping the sudser around in the past. It would be a shame to see another soap go and I hope that show gets some more sand in its hourglass.
