HBO, HBO Max Announce Summer Programming Including ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot, ‘Titans’ Season 3, and More

Summer is right around the corner and, in anticipation of the warmer months, HBO & HBO Max have announced a slew of new TV series, documentaries, and specials coming soon. Of note: Betty returns for its second season on June 11; the highly-anticipated Gossip Girl reboot debuts in July; and season 3 of Titans kicks off in August.

BETTY Season 2 (HBO | Comedy Series)

  • Synopsis: Based on Crystal Moselle’s critically acclaimed feature “Skate Kitchen,” this half-hour series follows a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding, set against the backdrop of New York City.
  • Cast: Nina Moran, Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Rachelle Vinberg and Ajani Russell.
  • Credits: Directed by Crystal Moselle; executive produced by Crystal Moselle, Alliah Sophia Mourad, Igor Srubshchik, Jason Weinberg, and Annie Schmidt.

REVOLUTION RENT (HBO | Documentary)

  • Synopsis: Directed by Andy Señor Jr. and Victor Patrick Alvarez, this film follows Señor Jr. to Cuba, where he is tasked with directing a stage production of the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, “Rent,” the country’s first Broadway musical produced by an American company in more than 50 years. Returning to his exiled parents’ homeland, Señor Jr. embarks on a personal journey, exploring his Cuban heritage and his family’s complex relationship to the country they love.

I’LL BE GONE IN THE DARK SPECIAL EPISODE (HBO | Documentary)

  • Synopsis: In the summer of 2020, former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, also known as the Golden State Killer, was sentenced to life in prison for the 50 home-invasion rapes and 13 murders he committed during his reign of terror in the 1970s and ‘80s in California. Many of the survivors and victim’s family members featured in the series reconvened for an emotional public sentencing hearing in August 2020,  where they were given the opportunity to speak about their long-held pain and anger through victim impact statements, facing their attacker directly for the first time and bringing a sense of justice and resolution to the case.

LFG (HBO Max | Documentary)

  • Synopsis: LFG is a no-holds-barred, inside account of the U.S. women’s national team’s ongoing fight for equal pay as told by Megan Rapinoe, Jessica McDonald, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara, Sam Mewis and others.
  • Credits: LFG is directed by Academy Award®-winners Andrea Nix Fine and Sean Fine, and produced by the Fines and Abby Greensfelder with Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman serving as executive producers for Propagate Content in collaboration with CNN Films and HBO Max.
  • Status: Debuts June 24.

THE LEGEND OF THE UNDERGROUND (HBO | Documentary)

  • Synopsis: This filmis a searing and timely look at the struggle against rampant discrimination that exists in Nigeria today, as seen through the lens of several charismatic, non-conformist youth who fight to live life out loud. Through social media, celebrity and bold creativity, they spark a cultural debate that challenges the ideals of gender, conformity and civil rights in Nigeria.

STARSTRUCK (HBO Max | Comedy Series)

  • Synopsis: STARSTRUCK follows Jessie, a millennial living in East London juggling two dead end jobs and navigating the awkward morning-after-the-night-before when she discovers the complications of accidentally sleeping with famous film star Tom.
  • Cast: Rose Matafeo, Nikesh Patel, Sindhu Vee, Emma Sidi and Minnie Driver
  • Credits: STARSTRUCK is executive produced by Rose Matafeo, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner and Rob Aslett.
  • Status: Debuts June 2021.

THE WHITE LOTUS (HBO | Limited Series)

  • Synopsis: A social satire set at an exclusive tropical resort, this six-episode limited series follows the vacations of various hotel guests over the span of a week as they relax and rejuvenate in paradise. But with each passing day, a darker complexity emerges in these picture-perfect travelers, the hotel’s cheerful employees and the idyllic locale itself.
  • Cast: Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Fred Hechinger, Jake Lacy, Brittany O’Grady, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney, Steve Zahn. Recurring guest stars: Molly Shannon, Jon Gries, Jolene Purdy, Kekoa Kekumano, Lukas Gage.

GOSSIP GIRL (HBO Max | Drama Series)

  • Synopsis: Eight years after the original blogger’s website went dark, this extension of the pop culture classic series finds a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance.
  • Cast: Whitney Peak, Jordan Alexander, Savannah Lee Smith, Evan Mock, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Emily Alyn Lind, Zion Moreno and Tavi Gevinson

100 FOOT WAVE (HBO | Sports Documentary Series)

  • Synopsis: This six-part series intimately captures the decade-long odyssey of surfing pioneer Garrett McNamara, who, after visiting Nazaré, Portugal in hopes of conquering a 100-foot wave, pushed the sport to ever-greater heights and alongside locals helped transform the small fishing village into the world’s preeminent big-wave surfing destination.

TITANS Season 3 (HBO Max | Drama Series)

  • Synopsis: TITANS follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong. In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats.
  • Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Conor Leslie, Curran Walters, Joshua Orpin, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, Damaris Lewis, Savannah Welch and Vincent Kartheiser.
  • Credits: TITANS is produced by Weed Road Pictures and Berlanti Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. Based on the characters from DC, the series was developed by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns & Greg Berlanti, with Johns, Berlanti, Greg Walker and Sarah Schechter serving as executive producers.
  • Status: Debuts August 2021.

THE OTHER TWO Season 2 (HBO Max | Comedy Series)

  • Season 1 Synopsis: The series stars Drew Tarver (“Bajillion Dollar Propertie$”) as a 28-year-old actor struggling to get better auditions than “Man At Party Who Smells Fart,” and Heléne Yorke (HBO’s “High Maintenance,” “Masters of Sex”) as his 30-year-old sister, who is struggling in general. As the two work toward finding themselves, their lives are completely upended when their 13-year-old brother, ChaseDreams, played by Case Walker, becomes incredibly famous overnight. The series also features Molly Shannon (HBO’s “Divorce”), who plays the siblings’ fame-ready mother, and Ken Marino (“Party Down”), as ChaseDreams newly-hired manager.

GENERA+ION Season 1, Part B (HBO Max | Dramedy Series)

  • Synopsis: GENERA+IONis a dark yet playful half-hour series following a diverse group of high school students whose exploration of modern sexuality (devices and all) tests deeply entrenched beliefs about life, love and the nature of family in their conservative community.
  • Cast: Nathanya Alexander, Chloe East, Nava Mau, Lukita Maxwell, Haley Sanchez, Uly Schlesinger, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Chase Sui Wonders with Justice Smith and Martha Plimpton. Recurring guest stars include J. August Richards, Mary Birdsong, Alicia Coppola, Patricia De Leon, Diego Josef, Anthony Kevyan, Sydney Mae Diaz, John Ross Bowie, Marwan Salama, Marisela Zumbado and Sam Trammell.

THE HYPE (HBO Max | Competition Series)

  • Synopsis: This competition series is set in the colliding worlds of streetwear, business and culture where fashion visionaries must elevate their designs and entrepreneurial sense to avoid elimination while remaining authentic to their style. Speedy Morman hosts the eight-episode season, which will feature co-signers including Grammy®-nominated recording artist and designer, Offset; creative director and founder of Bephies Beauty Supply, Beth Birkett; and Emmy®-nominated costume designer and renowned stylist, Marni Senofonte. The panel of judges will critique the competing streetwear’s unique DNA, combining fashion, music, art and lifestyle to refine the idea of a “runway” and the balance between art and commerce. 
  • Credits: Produced by Scout Productions, the team behind the Max Original ballroom competition series “Legendary” and Emmy® award winning series “Queer Eye” for Netflix. Scout’s David Collins, Rob Eric and Michael Williams developed the series with Emmy® winner Rachelle Mendez (“Undercover Boss,” “Leah Remini: Scientology & the Aftermath”). Collins, Eric and Williams will also executive produce with Mendez, Jay Brown and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith. Emmy® and Grammy® award winning producer Rikki Hughes (HBO Max’s ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air Reunion Special”) will showrun and executive produce.

TIG NOTARO ANIMATED SPECIAL (HBO | Comedy Special)

  • Synopsis: Emmy® and Grammy®-nominated stand-up comedian, Tig Notaro (HBO’s “Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted”), returns to HBO with the first-ever fully animated stand-up special, executive produced by Ellen DeGeneres.

BACK ON THE RECORD WITH BOB COSTAS (HBO | Sports Series)

  • Synopsis: 28-time Emmy® winner and legendary broadcaster Bob Costas returns to HBO with the launch of this new series, which will air four episodes each year. The series will be driven by in-depth interviews with the biggest names in sports, entertainment and popular culture, and discussions led by Costas that will address today’s most topical sports issues.  
  • Credits: Executive produced by Jonathan Crystal, Ross Greenburg and Howard Bryant.
  • Status: Debuts summer 2021.

HARD KNOCKS (HBO | Sports Series)

  • Synopsis: With the launch of HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE BALTIMORE RAVENS in the summer of 2001, HBO Sports and NFL Films developed not only a ground-breaking prime-time franchise but, in the process, created a category of programming in what has become known as “sports reality television.” The multi-part series redefined the terms “all-access” and “fastest turnaround time,” capturing the imagination of both the hardcore NFL fan and the casual sports and entertainment viewer.
