Something wicked is returning to NBC’s Days of our Lives this fall. It’s the worst kept secret in the soap opera fandom, Days of our Lives is revisiting the iconic devil possession storyline from the 90s, made famous by former head writer, the late great James E. Reilly, centered on DAYS icons Deidre Hall as Dr. Marlena Evans and Drake Hogestyn as Father John Black.

In 1994 Days of our Lives aired one of the most unforgettable and riveting stories in the show’s history. Beloved fan-favorite character Marlena Evans, therapist/mother/upstanding citizen, became possessed by the devil and wreaked havoc on the residents of Salem. And now, almost three decades later, one of the most legendary storylines in TV history returns to NBC’s longest running drama series.

The original story began in 1994 when the wicked Stefano DiMera began hypnotizing Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” The hypnosis meant to make her fall in love with him left her open to demonic possession and ultimately led to Marlena becoming possessed by the devil. Later that year (on Christmas Eve) in one of the most memorable moments in American pop culture history, Marlena levitated (see below). The story continued through 1995 and concluded that summer when John Black, her now husband who was thought to be a priest at the time, had to perform an emergency exorcism.

Teased by Hall and other co-stars in recent months, this is the first official confirmation from Days of our Lives that this iconic storyline will be returning to the series. Below you will find photos from the infamous possession and a teaser for the new storyline.

When Days of our Lives revisits the storyline this fall, fans can look forward to twists and turns you’d never suspect as well as familiar faces returning to save the day (or not)…. this time around, the devil knows no bounds and no one in Salem is safe!

Here’s a sneak peak of the promotional teaser NBC sent out to outlets to generate excitement for what’s to come!

New episodes of Days of our Lives air weekdays on NBC and are available to stream exclusively on Peacock for free.
