ABC Family has ordered Recovery Road, a new scripted drama centering on a teenager dealing with addiction.
Based on the novel by Blake Nelson, a pilot for Recovery Road was ordered earlier this year, with the series later entering redevelopment in the fall. According to reports, the cast will be retooled as a result of changes made to the series. It’s unknown if any of the cast that appeared in the pilot, which included Samantha Logan (666 Park Avenue, General Hospital, Teen Wolf) as the main character, will return for the reworked series.
The pilot was written by Easy A’s Bert V. Royal and Karen DiConcetto (Ruby & the Rockits).
Recovery Road follows Maddie, a teenager with a reputation for partying hard who doesn’t believe she has a problem. When she’s confronted by her school guidance counselor, Maddie is forced to choose between going to rehab or expulsion. Maddie’s decision leads to her living with other recovering addicts at a rehab facility while facing the daily pressures of her teenage life.
“ABC Family is best known for its ground-breaking original series and Recovery Road is right in our wheelhouse,” said Karey Burke, ABC Family executive vice president of programming of development. “This series will explore relevant social issues for our audience and shine a light on addiction. It’s a powerful addition to our lineup and the strong, authentic characters are sure to resonate with our audience.”
Danielle von Zerneck (Left to Die) and Pilgrim Studios’ Beth Miller (Revenge of the Bridesmaids) and Craig Piligian (Survivor) will executive produce the series with Royal and DiConcetto.
