‘Bones’ and ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Crossover Review

The idea of doing a Bones and Sleepy Hollow crossover may have seemed rather unusual but it worked amazingly better than most crossovers do. It made for a fun night of television. The appearance of the characters on their opposite shows added amusement to both shows which are already delightfully quirky in each’s own way. It succeeded in being viewers’ most primal desire for television – entertainment.

In the Bones episode “Resurrection in the Remains,” Booth and Brennan take on a strange case when some frat boys find a corpse of a young woman under the floor boards of church while planning a keg party…at the church. It turns out that the female body isn’t the only one laid to rest under neither the church when the team finds a coffin with a weird symbol on it and a headless redcoat inside. The redcoat of course attracts the attention of Sleepy Hollow’s Ichabod and Abbie. The British officer is Ichabod’s old enemy General Howe and his head has only recently been removed.

The female victim is a goth med student named Sarah. In a plot reminiscent of the movie Flatliners, Sarah was stopping her heart and reviving herself in order to see what happens when one dies. She had taken Howe’s head believing it had some sort of magical power. She talked her Catholic boyfriend, Joe, into giving death a try too and when nothing happened he lost his religion – and his cool – and hit her over the head with Howe’s skull.

My favorite moments of the episode:

• A jack ‘o lantern is dropped onto the head of Howe making him look like the classic version of the headless horseman.
• Brennan suggests to Ichabod that he start a sexual relationship with Abbie because it works so well for Booth and her.
• Hodgins is wearing demon eye contacts because he lost his regular ones.
• Booth knew Corbin.
• “Benjamin Franklin invented Sex on the Beach?”-Abbie “He called it Fondled in the Forest.”-Ichabod

While Bones had its cute moments, Sleepy Hollow wasn’t playin’ when it came to their Halloween episode. This holiday belongs to it.

The episode entitled “Dead Men Tell No Tales” began right where Bones left off but maintained its individuality. It was an episode of Sleepy Hollow not an extension of Bones. Howe’s body was on transport when Pandora took it upon herself to resurrect the corpse. She appealed to his hatred of Crane and set him forth to get his revenge. Howe’s first stop was a cemetery where he raised his undead army a.k.a. the Draugr.

Ichabod and Abbie enlist the assistance of Brennan and Booth to locate a tomb which hopefully holds the key to discovering how to defeat the Draugr. The tomb is booby trapped with Greek Fire or, as Brennan explains, ancient napalm. Ichabod deduces that this must be the way to defeat the Draugr. When the Draugr begin to attack on Halloween night, Ichabod uses himself as bait to lure them into the tunnels where the team torches them with fire guns.

This was a really good episode. It really felt like a celebration of Halloween and by extension Sleepy Hollow. There were goofy Halloween costumes, redcoat zombies, teens egging stuff, graveyard scenes, sword fights, trick or treating children, etc. It was probably one of the best episodes the series has ever had in my opinion. I throughly enjoyed watching.

Other than just being entertaining to watch, the episode did make some steps forward in the season’s serialized story arches. Howe was the dark secret that Pandora extracted from Ichabod a few episodes ago and she used him against Ichabod. The secret she pulled from Abbie was that she had found her father and was spying him. Hmmm…. I’m thinking when Abbie finally meets up with her father it’s not going to be very pleasant.

There is also the side story of Jenny and Joe’s search for Sophie’s boss Nevins. Joe seems a little too eager to meet up with Nevins, even offering to trade the shard. Jenny is a little bit more level-headed about the situation. She knows what happens when something powerful gets into the wrong hands. Abbie hasn’t been aware of Jenny and Joe’s misadventures until now. Abbie wants to help Agent Reynolds take down Nevins, who is believed to be a terrorist dealer. But Reynolds shows her pictures of Jenny with Sophie and wants to know what Abbie knows. I have a feeling the mysterious Nevins may somehow be connected to all the Pandora weirdness.

There was also some romance. Ichabod and Zoey have been flirting via social media for awhile now. At the end of the episode and with some encouragement from Abbie, Ichabod called Zoey and asked her out to dinner. Perhaps it was seeing her dressed as a Naughty Betsy Ross that made him decide to take the next step.

My favorite moments of the episode:

• The Sleepy Gang bowling in costume. Ichabod is John Adams, Abbie is Beyonce, Jenny is a Canadian Monty, Joe is a Bloody Surgeon.
• Brennan and Booth’s where going to dress their kids as Jane Goodall and a chimp for Halloween.
• The little girl dress as Cookie Lyon was adorable!
• Ichabod thinks Instagram is Instant Gram.
• “George Washington was a complete badass.”-Booth
