Disney+ announced that the upcoming fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will be its last. All eight episodes of the final season will premiere on the streamer August 9. The new season will see the Wildcats returning to East High, where they prepare a stage production of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” But, in a meta twist signature to the series, plans are disrupted when Disney announces the long-awaited “High School Musical 4: The Reunion” movie will shoot on location at their beloved high school. Franchise alum Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh will play themselves, resurrecting their “High School Musical” roles and the Wildcats will play featured extras in the movie.
Season six of The Chi will premiere August 4 streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime and on demand, before making its on-air debut August 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime. The new season will consist of 16 episodes, which will be split into two eight-episode installments with the second half of the season premiering at a later date. Big dreams are finally realized but at a cost and everyone will be tested in unimaginable ways as they calculate the risks and rewards of their next big move. Emmett and Kiesha’s blissful blended union is tested by his insatiable drive to expand Smokey’s and a new perilous partnership, while Kiesha finally races toward a rewarding new career. Happily married Jada mentors Emmett and her besties as they navigate relationships. Kevin is becoming a brilliant master gamer but struggles with the youthful pitfalls of early independence. Jake launches a new business, and Papa falls for an older woman while questioning his faith.
Season five of Love Island USA premieres on Peacock July 18 with new episodes six days a week. Set in Fiji, season five will feature a new group of sexy singles on a search for love in a beautiful villa. Throughout their stay in a tropical oasis, Islanders will couple up to face brand new heart-racing challenges and bigger twists and turns than ever before. Temptations will rise and drama will ensue as new “bombshells” arrive throughout the season, forcing Islanders to decide if they want to remain with their current partners or recouple with someone new. Islanders will also be at the mercy of viewers at home who will vote to determine who gets another shot at love and who leaves the villa heartbroken and empty-handed.
Adult animated comedy series Captain Fall premieres on Netflix July 28. A wet-behind-the-ears, yet good-hearted sea captain unwittingly finds himself at the helm of a smuggling ship for a terrible international cartel who’s using him as a fall guy in case the authorities ever catch up to them. The voice cast includes Jason Ritter, Christopher Meloni, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Anthony Carrigan, Alejandro Edda, Adam Devine and Trond Fausa.
The final season of grown-ish premieres June 28. It’s the beginning of the end, meaning it’s finally time for the gang to get their lives together.
Hulu has renewed Nine Perfect Strangers for a second season. Nicole Kidman will again star in the new season. It will take place in a different setting than the first season with a new cast. The series is based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty.
The English dub of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead premieres on both hulu and Netflix August 6. Surviving a zombie apocalypse beats being a wage slave any day! The CW has pulled the June 26 episode of Barons and will instead air an encore episode of Nancy Drew at 9:00/8:00c. The Rising will still air at 8:00/7:00c as previously scheduled.
Docuseries Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York premieres on HBO July 9. In the early 1990s, with homophobia and hate crimes on the rise as the AIDS crisis worsens, a serial killer preys upon gay men in New York City, infiltrating queer nightlife to find his victims. A gripping, investigative crime story, the four episode series also dives deeply into the prejudices and attitudes of the times, when deep-rooted biases in the criminal justice system and the media’s distorted public perception of the victims undermined the investigation and enabled a brutal killer to prey on a marginalized populace. The complexities of the closet combined with a long-standing mistrust of law enforcement further complicated the case. It also highlights the heroic efforts of activists, including the NYC Anti-Violence Project, to force law enforcement to recognize and protect the queer community.
Lisa Rinna will star in the third season of American Horror Stories. The American Horror Story spinoff anthology series features different horror stories in each episode.
ABC, Hulu, YouTube & Roku are set to to air episodes of the Disney+ original series American Born Chinese. Episode one will air on ABC June 24. Episodes one through three will stream on hulu from June 26 to July 9. Episode one will stream on YouTube from June 21 to July 23. Episodes one through three will stream on Roku June 26 to July 10. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, the series chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god. This is the story of a young man’s battle for his own identity, told through family, comedy, and action-packed Kung-Fu.
Dark Marvels premieres on The History Channel July 10. The series explores the history and engineering behind the world’s most diabolical inventions. Ninjala will premiere on HIDIVE June 27. Three episodes will premiere weekly. After years of experiments, three researchers finally create Ninja-Gum. This substance awakens dormant power within people descended from ninjas, but its creation isn’t without consequences. They are about to learn of the mysterious Ninjala Tournament and the conspiracies surrounding Ninja-Gum.
ESPN has signed a two year broadcast partnership for the 2023 and 2024 seasons of SlamBall. The fast-paced, gravity-defying sport that combines elements of basketball, football, hockey and trampolines. SlamBall relaunches live from Las Vegas on July 21 from 7-9 p.m. EDT. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+ will combine to air more than 30 hours of live SlamBall programming across five weekends, culminating August 17-19 with the SlamBall Playoffs and SlamBall Championship Game. All games will be played at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, with ticket sales beginning on June 27.
ABC News Live will celebrate Pride Month on June 25, with Pride Across America, an unprecedented streaming event that spans the entire country, featuring five hours of live coverage from three of the nation’s biggest pride marches. In partnership with Hulu and ABC Owned Television Stations WABC (New York), WLS (Chicago) and KGO (San Francisco), Pride Across America will begin June 25 at 11 a.m. EDT with a one-hour pre-show, followed by coverage of the pride marches, featuring special guests, inspiring content and more. Coverage will also be available to stream live to all Hulu subscribers.
Jason Momoa kicks off Discovery Channel’s Shark Week on July 23. Hosted this year by Jason Momoa, the event returns for its historic 35th year. Momoa, who is dedicated to protecting and preserving oceans, will set up the epic journeys and first-time revelations each night. All ten episodes of Project Greenlight premiere on Max July 13.
