Dustin Milligan (Ethan) to exit at the end of the season.
90210 is about to shake things up. Returning from a 6-week hiatus tomorrow night, we’ll finally get to see new showrunner Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair’s vision for the teen drama. The Gilmore Girls alum took over the show from creators Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah a few months ago. The writer-producer’s first step was to create a Dylan-like character for the reboot. We saw Matt Lanter’s Liam on the last episode before the hiatus mixing it up with AnnaLynne McCord’s Naomi.
On the heels of the news that Lanter has been upgraded to series regular for next season comes word that Dustin Milligan (Ethan Ward) has been downgraded to unemployed. Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello broke the news that Milligan’s contract option is not being picked up for next season. Though the CW and Paramount declined to comment, sources tell Ausiello that the door is being left open for Milligan to briefly pop in sometime in the fall to wrap up Ethan’s story. It’s not a shocker that Milligan was unhappy with his character’s storyline direction. Ethan was simply the boring jock with an equally boring girlfriend Annie (played by former DeGrassi star Shenae Grimes). Enter Lanter’s rebel without a cause.
The new, Ethan-less 90210 will be visually retooled in season 2. Sinclair has said she wants to make the show more about youth in Beverly Hills and Los Angles, like Gossip Girlis about youth in New York City. Sounds like Sinclair is ready to take things to the next level with 9021. It’s going to get edgy. We’ve already got drag racing, pregnant teens, sex tapes, and suicidal stalkers. It leaves you wondering where else 90210 will go.
