The second season of the hit FX series has been subtitled ‘Asylum’ and will delve into real-life horrors of the insane.
Season 1 delved into the haunted horrors of a house that trapped the dead inside it. This fall, the show returns and season two will revolve around real-life horrors of 1964 and will be called American Horror Story: Asylum.
In a statement released Tuesday, co-creator and executive producer, Ryan Murphy explained, “When we launched the show last year, we kept quiet about the closed-ended nature of the show because we didn’t want to tip off the audience that the characters were not going to survive. Now that it has been established that each year is a closed-ended story, the time seemed right to reveal what we’re calling the new installment.”
Season 1 stars Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, and Zachary Quinto will return to the sophomore season. They are joined by new cast members James Cromwell, Joseph Fiennes, Adam Levine, Chloe Sevigny, Clea Duvall, and Jenna Dewan.
As for the subtitle, Murphy explained, “We picked Asylum because it not only describes the setting – an insane asylum run by Jessica Lange’s character which was formerly a tuberculosis ward – but also signifies a place of haven for the unloved and the uwanted. This year’s theme is about sanity and tackling real-life horrors.”
The setting for the asylum is an East Coast mental institution for the criminally insane during the 1960s. Cast members from the first season will portray completely different roles.
American Horror Story’s first season garnered 17 Primetime Emmy nominations, tying them with AMC’s Mad Men for the lead in nominations.
Season 2 returns in October. An exact date has not been released.
