Fans of The CW’s Arrow were confused last night when it was reported that The Pact’s Caity Lotz had been cast in the role of Dinah Drake/Black Canary.
We’d all assumed Dinah Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) would eventually be putting on the fishnets, not to mention that her mother’s name was Dinah Drake Lance (Alex Kingston). So was there going to be a third Dinah on the show?
Thankfully, the confusion has now been cleared up. In an exclusive interview with TV Guide, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has set the record straight and said that while Lotz has been cast on the show for a recurring role, her character is not Dinah Drake. However, Kreisberg describes Lotz’s character (who he will not name) as the beginning of the Black Canary story.
Kreisberg told TV Guide, “So much of our show is about defying expectations, meeting expectations and exceeding expectations, and we really want our fans to experience the show by watching it and enjoying it and enjoying all the twists and turns and surprises the way we intend.”
“Everyone knows that Laurel Lance is the Black Canary. That’s the way it is in the comic books, but how we get from A to B is the story of our show,” Kreisberg continued. “In the same way that Oliver, when we meet him, is the vigilante, but this season he’s going to becoming the Arrow, that’s the step of his journey to eventually becoming the Green Arrow.”
In addition to The Pact, Lotz’s past credits include Death Valley, Mad Men and Bring It On: All or Nothing.
