Well damn. Five months after returning to The Young and the Restless, David Tom has been ousted as Billy Abbott reports Daytime Confidential. Army Wives star Burgess Jenkins has been tapped as his replacement.
According to Daytime Confidential, the long-running soap plans to take the character in a different direction. Jenkins is expected to debut in late June.
Though new to soap operas, Burgess Jenkins, 40, has an impressive primetime resume that should assuage concerns of fans. His credits include roles on JAG, One Tree Hill, Drop Dead Diva, Nashville and a series regular role on Lifetime’s Army Wives.
Tom originated the role in 1999, earning two Daytime Emmy nominations in 2000 and 2001, winning the award for Outstanding Younger Actor in 2001. He departed Y&R in 2002 and returned to the soap business in 2004 when he took over the role of Paul Cramer on ABC’s One Life to Live.
David Tom returned to the series late last year after the mega popular Billy Miller, who played Billy from 2008-2012, opted not to re-sign with The Young and the Restless. Miller taped his final episode December 19, last airing in the January 30 episode. Tom first aired February 3.
